Central Post Office (Museo Postal), Santiago

4.3
#11 of 57 in Museums in Santiago
If you're interested in architecture or philately, visit Central Post Office (Museo Postal). Designed by Ricardo Brown, the French-style building with an ornate white facade still functions as a post office, but also features a postal museum. It was built in 1882 on the spot where Pedro de Valdivia, the founder of the capital city, had built his home centuries ago--and some of the original walls from his house are still standing today. Visit the museum portion of the building to acquaint yourself with Chile’s postal history, see different types of old communication equipment, and to view a large collection of interesting stamps from all over the world. • You can only send mail (like postcards) or buy stamps at the post office (there is no collection boxes around town). Inside the building, on the left, is the Postal Museum. In addition to the collection of stamps from different countries of the world, it is possible to meet equipment used for communication and there's even a room representing the Chilean postal service as it used to be.

  • just routine. Elegant building that houses the central offices of Chile and mail is in the Plaza de Armas to the Lake of the national historical Museum. The building, built in 1882 on the foundations of the old palace of the Governors, which was destroyed by fire in 1881 and was the residence of Presidents of the Republic until 1846, when the Government House moved to the Palacio de La Moneda. In 1908 the remodelling of the facade adapted to a neoclassical style of French influence. In 1976 it was declared historical monument and since 2004 shelters in your floor plan the Central Post Office and the Museum of the post office. The interior is even more sumptuous, and conservation is impressive. Special attention to the glass roof pendant that drops him and bronze mailboxes! The day we visited had an employee polishing cast iron grids with thousands of volutes on the ledge inside the upper deck, just a routine maintenance procedure. This explains the conservation.
