Castillo Hidalgo, Santiago

4.4
Enjoy panoramic views over Santiago at Castillo Hidalgo. Built on the command of the Governor of Chile in 1816, the hilltop fort was designed to defend Spanish colonial interests from nationalist forces. After the country gained independence, the fort was renamed after fallen captain Manuel Hidalgo. For a building designed for defense, the fort displays ostentatious architecture, indicative of late Spanish colonialism. Shaded garden areas surround the fort, with the city laid out at the foot of the hill. Castillo Hidalgo is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Santiago Edition.

  • I think the Castillo is under-rated in the reviews. It is an oasis of greenery in the Santiago city center that affords snatched glimpses of the city. Go in the late afternoon.  more »
  • Very nice location, in addition to the walks around the Cerro Santa Lucia. It pays to know the structure, which looks like a castle ... prepare your breath!

  • It is worthwhile if you actually go to Cerro Santa Lucia. It makes no sense out of all the other environment which is wonderful (except the ruinous Japanese garden).

  • Only for the sure-footed, but well worth a trip in Santiago. One of the most beautiful public parks I've ever been to, it's a perfect place to enjoy some shade on a hot summer day. It's also of course great for getting panoramic photos of Santiago.
  • Amazing and iconic location in Santiago, Chile. Not a great place to being anyone who is in a wheelchair or crutches. The city does not seem to maintain the trails much, so many are in some state of disrepair. However, for the able bodied this is a great place to visit and hike to spectacular views of the city.
  • Beautiful views, easy, accesible hike, historical as well. A great place to take a stroll in Santiago.
  • Very nice location and good view of the city. Unfortunately the municipality doesn't maintain the place, many paths are closed or in advanced state of disrepair.
  • Beautiful park, great views of Santiago seen from climbing the steps to the tower of the fort. Fantastic experience.

Where to stay in Santiago

Santiago features numerous distinct neighborhoods filled with affordable sleeping options. For easiest access to the city's top museums and eateries, consider the hotels located in the pleasant downtown area, where you can also find many furnished apartments ideal for longer stays. For close proximity to the city's best nightlife options, consider Bellavista or Barrios Lastarria, or head to charming Providencia if you prefer something a bit more sophisticated and less raucous.
