Castillo Hidalgo, Santiago

4.3
Enjoy panoramic views over Santiago at Castillo Hidalgo. Built on the command of the Governor of Chile in 1816, the hilltop fort was designed to defend Spanish colonial interests from nationalist forces. After the country gained independence, the fort was renamed after fallen captain Manuel Hidalgo. For a building designed for defense, the fort displays ostentatious architecture, indicative of late Spanish colonialism. Shaded garden areas surround the fort, with the city laid out at the foot of the hill. One of the cooler on my visit to Santiago. Castillo Hidalgo breathes history ... the old buildings, stone stairs, statues, cannons, towers, gardens, etc., all awesome! Easy access and free entry.

Difficult to climb and climb its many stairs, but all the architecture and history of the place, in addition to the cityscape are the real adventure.

Definitely worth the visit, and climb to the top for spectacular views, the area is beautiful, but some needs repairs. The steps can be real slippery.

I highly suggest making this trek either first thing in the morning or toward closing time because the park and vantage points become absolutely packed. Plenty of areas to explore and the hike to the top of the castle is worth it for the vantage point. Sweeping views of all sides of the city. The top of the castle gets extremely crowded and make sure you wear decent shoes to climb the steep, slippery stairs
