Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs, San Pedro de Atacama

(3.8/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
At Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs, drawings carved into the red rock face are evidence of a civilization from long ago. The petroglyphs served as a place for travellers to document their experiences and contribute to history and culture. The drawings are attributed to the Atacama people that date back as early as 500 CE. The images depict everything from gatherings of people to livestock, camelids, llamas, and foxes. Native and local guides provide valuable insight into the history of their people as told through the rock art. The site is relatively remote, but tour companies offer trips to and from the prehistoric site. • Some very good petroglyphs can be viewed on a 15-minute walk. An effort has been made to protect these as age, weather, and vandals have destroyed many elsewhere - maybe some here?  more »
