Landmark Tourist Spot
At Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs, drawings carved into the red rock face are evidence of a civilization from long ago. The petroglyphs served as a place for travellers to document their experiences and contribute to history and culture. The drawings are attributed to the Atacama people that date back as early as 500 CE. The images depict everything from gatherings of people to livestock, camelids, llamas, and foxes. Native and local guides provide valuable insight into the history of their people as told through the rock art. The site is relatively remote, but tour companies offer trips to and from the prehistoric site. Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
