Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs, San Pedro de Atacama

#39 of 67 in Things to do in San Pedro de Atacama
At Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs, drawings carved into the red rock face are evidence of a civilization from long ago. The petroglyphs served as a place for travellers to document their experiences and contribute to history and culture. The drawings are attributed to the Atacama people that date back as early as 500 CE. The images depict everything from gatherings of people to livestock, camelids, llamas, and foxes. Native and local guides provide valuable insight into the history of their people as told through the rock art. The site is relatively remote, but tour companies offer trips to and from the prehistoric site. Plan your visit to Yerbas Buenas Petroglyphs and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our San Pedro de Atacama holiday planner.

We passed by this place on the way to Valley of the Rainbow, thinking that it was going to be the secondary attraction, but it became the main. We arrived at the rental car. Along the way we found llamas that, to stop the car, came alone. (They would seek food?). I love to travel, and I do it often, but I never saw such well-preserved petroglyphs, and as many as in this place. There is even a sector B somewhat remote to recommend not to lose, since climbing the mountain you can see the best petroglyphs of animals of the place, people, and even a monkey. The explanation of the only local person is received at the entrance and is very poor. It is a point to improve.

One of the most interesting sites I met in Atacama. Is a small time tunnel. One has to understand that such drawings should not be judged by your artistic quality, but as information panels about the everyday, the inhabitants used to educate their children and, who knows, have fun and spend time. Worth (more interesting than the Valley of the Rainbow).

I went by the return of the Valle of Arcoiris. Is super interesting to see the petroglyphs and be in a place that served to House a human group ha 11,000 years. The petroglyphs are beautiful.

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
