Three stages of lava flow emanate from the volcano, which formed on Pleistocene ignimbrites.Licancabur has been active during the Holocene, after the ice ages. Although no historic eruptions of the volcano are known, lava flows extending into Laguna Verde have been dated to 13,240 ± 100 BP. The volcano has primarily erupted andesite, with small amounts of dacite and basaltic andesite. Its climate is cold, dry and very sunny, with high levels of ultraviolet radiation. Licancabur is not covered by glaciers, and vegetation such as cushion plants and shrubs are found lower on its slopes. Chinchillas were formerly hunted on the volcano.

  • It is 5920 metres and see it clearly and very close to the route, in the passage from Jama to San Pedro de Atacama. The maximum height of this step is exactly 4830 m just in front of the volcano. From San Pedro de Atacama, there are numerous excursions of one or more days. This volcano is bordered to the North and East by Bolivia and the Bolivian side there is a huge green lagoon, protected area, because they live there numerous flamingos. The Licancabur volcano is also of huge archaeological and anthropological interest since there was Inca civilizations that were in its surroundings, that recall ancient sacred ceremonies. The attraction has a crater that contains inside a pond that freezes during the winter season, this Lagoon is the fourth most the world's highest. An almost exact cone peak, is continuously snowy. Don't miss the excursions attached photos. was I helpful?

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
