Salar de Tara, San Pedro de Atacama

(4.7/5 based on 1,600+ reviews on the web)
Visitors often feel like they landed on another planet once they reach Salar de Tara, located on a high-altitude plateau in Chile's Atacama region. The salt flats play mind-bending tricks with your sense of perspective, surrounded in the distance by craggy moonscape terrain. After rain, the flats form shallow reflecting pools, creating an unforgettable opportunity to see almost perfect reflections of the landscape in the distance. Even more magical are the flocks of pink flamingoes, just waiting for you to take that perfect photo. Prepare to be hit by the altitude--at 4,800 m (15,750 ft), the thin air makes walking much more difficult than you might be used to. Take it easy and let your body acclimatize to the altitude. Using our international travel planner, San Pedro de Atacama attractions like Salar de Tara can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Over the 5 days we spent in San Pedro de Atacama, and at the rate of at least 1 trip per day, the Salar de Tara is the site that we preferred. The site is simply superb, magnificent colors in the middle of nowhere! All at about 4800 m altitude... To get there, the road is long but beautiful, it is strongly recommended to go with an Agency (we go through the desert for more than an hour, without real track and road). Not to be missed!

  • It was a highlight of our 4 day visit to the region. From San Pedro it's about 1.5 hr drive. Once you get off paved road ride is very rough - maybe you can skip massage that night - but the view of th...  more »
  • Nice trip with the Agency although flamingo it started badly because they almost forget us. an hour late because the office had noted the information about our hotel. It's a good thing could reach them with skype! But nice output. good breakfast with French baguettes delicious and nice dinner served by our guide and our driver. It rains about 10 days in the year and we unfortunately fell during this period. But the rain has been managed. A friendly race against the clock with a big fall of hail to our return. Downside: be vigilant when booking to flamingo office. Keep receipts for amounts paid and clearly specify the address of your hotel because they seem well organized.
