Salar de Tara, San Pedro de Atacama

(4.7/5 based on 1,600+ reviews on the web)
Visitors often feel like they landed on another planet once they reach Salar de Tara, located on a high-altitude plateau in Chile's Atacama region. The salt flats play mind-bending tricks with your sense of perspective, surrounded in the distance by craggy moonscape terrain. After rain, the flats form shallow reflecting pools, creating an unforgettable opportunity to see almost perfect reflections of the landscape in the distance. Even more magical are the flocks of pink flamingoes, just waiting for you to take that perfect photo. Prepare to be hit by the altitude--at 4,800 m (15,750 ft), the thin air makes walking much more difficult than you might be used to. Take it easy and let your body acclimatize to the altitude. Using our international travel planner, San Pedro de Atacama attractions like Salar de Tara can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Salad de tara is not so special. There arent much interesting to see. Just the desert. When you go to such altitude you want to see something special. But i would not recommend it. Better go to geyser...  more »
  • Beautiful landscapes, beautiful in the aridity of the desert. It is possible to enjoy nature on the flora and fauna of this place. The Rockies are fantastic. It's very cold and altitude (reaches 4800 meters) can lead some people to feel some discomfort breathing, headaches, etc., but still worth it because the higher place is happening too fast.

  • I think tbem depends on the Agency with which you make the ride, but the landscapes are going to be changing and are completely unlike anything you may have seen in your life, arid desert, rock formations, ponds and lakes with herds of animals, incredible
