From the trademark pink flamingos to salt water lagoons and scenic hiking trails, Reserva Nacional de Flamencos captures all the beauty of the Atacama Desert. Covering an area of 740 sq km (285.7 sq mi), the reserve presents a real treat for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts. The grounds are divided into several sections; expect to pay separate admission fees for each one. Bear in mind that the reserve has a desert climate with temperatures that vary greatly between night and day, so always make sure to have some warm clothes on hand. • Los Flamencos national reserve protects much of the around of San Pedro de Atacama, I visited the Chaxar lagoon. This place is beautiful, you have a very close contact with the flamingos, so it must be silent at all times; binoculars are needed if you want to observe them in detail. A guide of the reserve made us the introduction needed, explaining all the factors that made that you formation of this reserve and the need to protect it, are well strict on the behavior of the visitors, which seems to me excellent by the fragility of the environment. There is a zone of snack, bathrooms and a didactic multimedia room which are free to use. Vale absolutely worthwhile visiting it to contemplate and understand the ecosystem of a Salt Lake.

  • The most amazing sunset I have ever witnessed! Go slow and take your time, observe the flamingos ... is simply beautiful! A landscape of jaw-dropping!!! Like everything in Atacama. Don't forget to take and take water, help the symptoms of altitude. Always go with was specialized, because there is no internet signal. Super recommend!

  • A beautiful place, all white and a lot of Flemings scattered across the water. The entrance is economic, a lovely walk, if you like walking without doing much physical effort, I recommend it.

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
