Lascar, San Pedro de Atacama

4.8
#10 of 11 in Nature in San Pedro de Atacama
Set foot on Lascar, the northern Chilean Andes' most active volcano. Tackling the volcano with a guide is a must, because of the high altitude and the eruptive history of the site. Despite the path's gentle incline, guides set an easy pace as to protect against the effects of the high altitude, which can be draining on a long hike. See sweeping views from the summit, with the otherworldly salt lakes below appearing like mirrors among the dusty, volcanic landscape. You can't acess the volcano during periods of increased seismic activity, so check with reliable local sources before booking your tour. • We booked a tour to the Valley of the Moon in this agency. More expensive than others she had the advantage of being less numerous than in others what we were looking for. The day J it did good for us at another agency without telling us. We ended up in a big bus packed (with curtains on the windows, great to look out). For some other tourists had paid half compared to we... The Agency wouldn't know about our claims. Basically they sell the dream and a great service (expensive) but in fact none of this is true. If they had warned or informed we could probably find a solution but again no information even though they knew that the tour that we wasn't the one we bought. Not very honest all this... Very disappointed we recommend to go through another agency

  • Recommend for anyone who wants adventure, excitement and overcoming! Requires a bit of fitness to perform the ascent because arrives around 5,550 m altitude, not to mention the physical effort. I made the climb with the Vulcan agency Expediciones, my guide was the Christian who motivated me to make it to the top! The ride lasts all day, gusty and it's really cold!

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
