Lagunas Miscanti y Miniques, San Pedro de Atacama
Categories: Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks
Soak in the stunning scenery of Lagunas Miscanti y Miniques, two natural jewels of northern Chile. The two salt-water lakes, the Miscanti and the Miniques, lie at an altitude of over 4,000 m (13,123 ft) on the Antiplano Plateau, in the shadows of the mighty Miniques volcano and the towering Cerro Miscanti Mountain. Split from a single body of water by volcanic lava flow, the lakes feature a blue surface that perfectly reflects the surrounding mountains. The most popular way to reach the lakes is on an organized tour, since an individual journey can be tricky due to high altitude and poor conditions of the local roads. Amazing! It is a protected area and we were only allowed to walk on the path and couldn’t approach the lake. It is actually two lagunas next to each other which were originally one till after a volcanic eruption the lava divided the lake in the middle.
