Laguna Tebinquinche, San Pedro de Atacama

4.7
#1 of 23 in Outdoors in San Pedro de Atacama
Discover how captivating the driest place on Earth can be when you add some water to it at Laguna Tebinquinche. Unlike the other lagoons of the Atacama Desert--generally small pools of water--this is actually a proper saltwater lake, nestled under the towering peaks of the Andes. The mirrorlike surface reflects the surrounding scenery, making this spot famous for some of Chile's most beautiful sunsets. In the summer the lake tends to dry, leaving behind a thick layer of salt that you can easily walk on. Drive to the lake on your own, or join one of the many organized tours of the salt flats that regularly leave from San Pedro de Atacama. • Beautiful place, but the distance is too large and too bad infrastructure. I would not return despite all the beauty of the salt pools.

  • Laguna Cejar is expensive , more if you don't want to swimm. Ther is no rpice for only visitors who xwant only to see. So this one is a good alternative but it's 30 mnb more of car. Nice hikes around ...  more »
  • We went to see the sunset at the laguna Techinquiche. (4000 pesos for 2 people). I think there were a lot of tourists and in my opinion, it doesn't help to pay to go there. There is nothing to do. I most recommend the luna Valley.

  • Magical! That’s one of the best places I have seen in my life. The road is a bit tricky but still easy to drive. It’s empty because it’s a bit more remote than the more popular lakes. Go there and enjoy the quiet, the solitude, and the views!
  • Probably the most beautiful place in the Atacama desert, and it's not as famous as other places there. Plan to see the sunset there, as it is really beautiful. The guided tours give some 20 minutes to see the place, but I would have liked to walk the whole place, which would have taken longer. Go by yourself in a rented car, if possible, to take as much time as you want.
  • Sick place for sunsets and learn about the first bacterias who created oxygen.
  • Splendid Laguna with surreal atmosphere. This point is reachable by bike from San Pedro, which is what I did but make sure you leave in the morning so you have enough time to chill at Ojos del Salar and Laguna Cejar on your way back.
  • It is located near to Toconao, you can get there by car or bike (if you think you can do it) In this place you can see Flemings and other native animals, also you can visit "los ojo del salar"

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
