Laguna Chaxa, San Pedro de Atacama

4.4
#7 of 11 in Nature in San Pedro de Atacama
The flat and watery landscape of Laguna Chaxa draws many nature lovers interested in exploring a unique ecosystem of salt lakes and flamingo breeding sites. Though the area's ground is crusted with salt, three of the five different types of flamingos reside here, including the Chilean, Andean, and James species. As you point your camera at the flurry of flamingos flying over the lake, keep an eye out for other birds, like sandpipers, puna plovers, and Andean avocets. Time your visit for either sunrise or sunset, when the area's birds are most active and easiest to photograph. Our San Pedro de Atacama trip itinerary builder makes visiting Laguna Chaxa and other San Pedro de Atacama attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Great place to see the salt flats of the Atacama. Flamingos frequent the mud ponds. There is an established trail around the flats with informational plaques. There is a park entrance fee (3000 CLP I think)
  • Most magic place im the Atacama desert
  • Awesome!
  • The coldest place in the morning. Never felt so cold in my life, even wearing all the clothes I brought in thermal. But it's worth the proximity with the flamingos and the landscape, rendering beautiful photos!

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
