Laguna Chaxa, San Pedro de Atacama

(4.1/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
The flat and watery landscape of Laguna Chaxa draws many nature lovers interested in exploring a unique ecosystem of salt lakes and flamingo breeding sites. Though the area's ground is crusted with salt, three of the five different types of flamingos reside here, including the Chilean, Andean, and James species. As you point your camera at the flurry of flamingos flying over the lake, keep an eye out for other birds, like sandpipers, puna plovers, and Andean avocets. Time your visit for either sunrise or sunset, when the area's birds are most active and easiest to photograph. Make Laguna Chaxa a part of your San Pedro de Atacama vacation plans using our San Pedro de Atacama trip itinerary maker.

  • Beautiful self guided tour in the lagoon and salt flat, definitely worth it and very well prepared. sometimes it smelled a bit funny in the lagoon but that's life :-)
  • Beautiful place to enjoy the birds and other small animals are camouflaged on the rocks. Is the Salar of Atacama, one of the largest in the world.

  • The formation of this salar is impressive, the guide explaining how forms that solo was pretty cool. In this place we learn a lot about the local wildlife too. Great for walking in silence and watch the scenery and the flamingos.
