Laguna Chaxa, San Pedro de Atacama

(4.1/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web)
The flat and watery landscape of Laguna Chaxa draws many nature lovers interested in exploring a unique ecosystem of salt lakes and flamingo breeding sites. Though the area's ground is crusted with salt, three of the five different types of flamingos reside here, including the Chilean, Andean, and James species. As you point your camera at the flurry of flamingos flying over the lake, keep an eye out for other birds, like sandpipers, puna plovers, and Andean avocets. Time your visit for either sunrise or sunset, when the area's birds are most active and easiest to photograph. Make Laguna Chaxa a part of your San Pedro de Atacama vacation plans using our San Pedro de Atacama trip itinerary maker.
