Church of San Pedro de Atacama, San Pedro de Atacama

One of the oldest buildings in Chile, whitewashed colonial-style Church of San Pedro de Atacama is an outstanding example of indigenous building techniques. The masons used rock and adobe (dried mud) for the walls, two types of local wood for the roof, and slats made of giant elephant cactus for the ceiling. Notice how the door and the portal are bound together with llama leather. The interior features a brightly colored altar, standing in contrast to the simple and elegant white exterior. The garden planted with algarrobo and pepper trees surrounds the church, declared a historical monument in 1951. • Small church located in the heart of San Pedro de Atacama. Our only regret: it was repainted in Brown... It looked much cuter in white!

  • The Church of San Pedro is right on the square. It is a simple construction view outside, but upon entering it is clear the whim, affection and devotion that were employed in the construction. The wood used on the ceiling, beams and doors is of Cactus, that in addition to beautiful, gives a unique feature to the site.

  • The Church is located in the central area of San Pedro, it is a construction characteristic of the region, rustic and simple, but beautiful and pleasant. Worth knowing.

  • Very beautiful church that was renovated in 2015 and is now brown and not white. This is its original color it had up until the 70ties.
  • Beautifil old tradicional curch. Is the "only one" You can skip it. Is right in the city center with is like 400 squares meters
  • Interesting altarpiece and ceiling, with information about the church's phases from 1557 on. A quiet spot in the tiny but busy downtown of SPA.
  • Beautiful church, full of history and interesting facts.
  • Very nice Colonial Church in San Pedro de Atacama. It is worth to explore it. Very picturesque and attached to the square (where there is free Wi-Fi provided by the Government of Chile connection).

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
