Church of San Pedro de Atacama, San Pedro de Atacama

#10 of 67 in Things to do in San Pedro de Atacama
One of the oldest buildings in Chile, whitewashed colonial-style Church of San Pedro de Atacama is an outstanding example of indigenous building techniques. The masons used rock and adobe (dried mud) for the walls, two types of local wood for the roof, and slats made of giant elephant cactus for the ceiling. Notice how the door and the portal are bound together with llama leather. The interior features a brightly colored altar, standing in contrast to the simple and elegant white exterior. The garden planted with algarrobo and pepper trees surrounds the church, declared a historical monument in 1951. Sadly, the last time we saw this church it had been newly adobe'd and was no longer the lovely white we remembered. Inside, the roof is made of cactus wood.  more »

Very simple, but a nice architecture. I didn't do the walk with the Guide, but spent a lot of time admiring the small church and the square.

Very nice Church located in the middle of the town of San Pedro, only recently was remodeled, so if they expect the white Church that fills postcards already isn't now is brown or ground, but is still very beautiful. Inside it is wooden and has multiple religious figures. In short, a place to meet in a few minutes but you should visit.

Very beautiful church that was renovated in 2015 and is now brown and not white. This is its original color it had up until the 70ties.

Interesting altarpiece and ceiling, with information about the church's phases from 1557 on. A quiet spot in the tiny but busy downtown of SPA.

Beautiful church, full of history and interesting facts.

This church is the main meeting place between tourists to get in the region, is next to a square with plenty of shade.

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
