  • My trip was with the family. My daughter wanted to do this tour. It was interesting, but if the money had short I wouldn't do. Depending on the season it gets very cold, because 80% of the tour, the explanations of the stars, constellations, etc are on the outside. The visitor stands still hearing the information.

  • The visit to ALMA is a must-see in San Pedro de Atacama. In addition to being free and that will transport you from back and forth, is an opportunity to get to know one of the most important astronomical centers in the world. Additionally, you have a nice view of the desert from the top. It is not a visit to observe celestial bodies through a telescope, but a tour to learn about the operation of the radio telescope, its history and development. This project is a great example of global scientific collaboration and is fascinating to know that even individuals we can participate in it. It is advisable to make reservations in advance, but if you haven't done it, you can venture out to go to the site of the bus (almost next to the intercity bus terminal) stop and sign up on the waiting list which is in order of arrival. why you must arrive!

  • I wasn't expecting to see the antennas are installed to 5,000 meters above sea level, but with the idea of understanding what is done in this Observatory in the middle of nowhere. Is an association between countries, which built radio telescopes that capture microwave. It's extraordinary infrastructure that they built and it is hard to imagine that an organization like this is installed right in the middle of the desert. I was impressed with the Organization and with the discoveries that they perform. About reservations: If you want to ensure the site, schedule months in advance. There's the main queue and a wait queue. However, even without that we are not in the queue, we can go on the first try and all who were there, too. Come around 8:30 to the venue to be one of the first on the extra list. The visits are only on Saturdays and Sundays.

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
