Aldea de Tulor, San Pedro de Atacama

Take a step back in time to the mesolithic era at Aldea de Tulor, an archeological site that has unveiled a settlement dating back to between 800 CE and 1,200 CE. The remains of the ancient village take the form of boreholes--circular clay walls made to collect water. Through the study of the rock layers archeologists were able to determine that the civilization disappeared due to drought. Artifacts found on the site include human and animal bones, ceramic, carbon, seashells, and rocks. Reproductions of houses help visitors fully appreciate what the village once looked like. • We stopped for a quick visit to get to know the place ... historical place, where excavations were found buildings that were part of a village of former residents of the region, replicas.

  • I really wonder if it is worth the trip because there is little to see on this site, but with explanations of a guide in English we have an inkling of what it was.

  • This is a well maintained excavated site very close to San Pedro de Atacama. Not sure if the tours take them, but it is easily accessible by car, and a bit long, but accessible by bicycles. The guide knew her stuff, and she explained the things quite well (I'm not sure they have English guides though). We ended up learning quite a bit about region and the Atacamañan people, and not just the site itself. I'd highly recommend this place, especially if you like to know the anthropological history of places.
  • It's 7k from the town square. It's got its beauty but it's not a must see if you're not that much into archeology.
  • A simple but interesting place to visit nearby the town if you like archaeology. You can access by foot, car o bike.
  • Lovely park with interpreter's center at Atacameno archaeological site.
  • It's OK, but I think I'll rather spend my time somewhere else

Where to stay in San Pedro de Atacama

As the stepping-stone to the nearby national reserve, San Pedro de Atacama offers an impressive range of hotels and guesthouses. Despite the big selection, prices remain relatively high throughout the year due to the town's status as northern Chile's tourist hub. At the peak of the summer season (late December to late March), some budget-friendly hostels even require single travelers to share a room with another guest. If you wish to avoid that, look into one of the hotels, many of which cluster around the town's central area and line the main street.
