Ballenera Quintay, Quintay

(3.9/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
Once the largest national company of Chile, Ballenera Quintay now acts as a museum and research center that tells the story of whale hunting in the country. Located by the seaside, this is an area where over 1,500 whales were slaughtered. Step inside the museum to find whale bones, models of ships, and pictures on exposed stone walls. After your visit, cool down with a swim at the nearby beach if the weather permits. Ballenera Quintay is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Quintay Edition.

  • Not knew so attractive that could be this place seaside, close to Valparaiso. Only to the get to the caleta of Quintay I found out that is could visit a Museum "the whaling more important of the country". Among these islets was founded there by the year 1900, and we can see how was the work of more than 2,100 whaling, with a production of 43.826 barrels of oil per year. How sad that as humans do so indiscriminate use of natural resources. Fortunately now is to become in a Museum, since Chile signed a treaty international in 1967 that forbade the hunting of the whales. Thanks to this, our planet's largest mammal can increase in number and we can now protect them so that they follow a quiet life in their natural habitat. If are in Quintay can visit Beach girl, beach big, their caleta, making diving, fishing sports, trekking. It is the most wonderful mix between: Valley, forest, beach and sea.

  • It is very sad to be in a place where so many innocent animals are killed. Although the Museum is quite simple, it exhibits little, mainly photos and some bones. The most surprising thing is that whales are still sailing in the Bay each year. If you are in Quintay, be sure to visit.

  • The environment of the place is not to be missed. It is worth doing the tour of the whaling to learn a little history of fishing and of the people. This very well preserved and recovered.

  • A shocking place makes you look as it was in his time.

  • Very good view, food and crafts, few parking lots by the whaling and several on the beach where they charge, the descent to the Creek is very pronounced, care to down and up on a motorcycle, sometimes wait almost hanging.

  • We always visited the Whaling Museum with children. Is very interesting the place and is learns about the tasks that is made there with the poor whales. It would be great that they enabled the climb to the lighthouse.
