#7 of 15 in Museums in Valparaiso Region
Specialty Museum Museum
Once the largest national company of Chile, Ballenera Quintay now acts as a museum and research center that tells the story of whale hunting in the country. Located by the seaside, this is an area where over 1,500 whales were slaughtered. Step inside the museum to find whale bones, models of ships, and pictures on exposed stone walls. After your visit, cool down with a swim at the nearby beach if the weather permits. Ballenera Quintay is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Quintay Edition.

  • Visited Quintay in April 2014 and am reminded of it now by The Big Blue on BBC which today was all about whales and included an account of the now largely defunct whaling industry. I am fascinated by ...  more »

  • Good place to learn about local history
  • The place is impressive and very sad. The permanent exhibition has many interesting facts, although it is not sufficiently comprehensive. I recommend coming with time to walk around and take pictures with calm. The view is spectacular and the place in general is very emotional. It is bad taste that they have opened a college for profit in the place.

  • The whaling of Quintay, empty with its wineries, their dead debris, blood still on the rocks, the bones of cetaceans royalists, gnawed iron, wind and sea, the squawking of the albatross waiting were whales: to another sea? They fled the fierce coast? Or immersed in the soft mud of the depth they ask for punishment for the Chilean oceans? And no one defended the giant! Today, in July slipped even in ice cream oil: shoes towards the pole I was going as if invisible presences me pushed into the sea, and a serious melancholy as the winter is holding my feet by the disabled whaling. • It is a good Museum, but still by mounting more things. She is a little empty.

  • Good sign, good project. Notable with regard to how I met her years ago.
