Saltos del Petrohue, Puerto Varas

Marvel at Saltos del Petrohue, a long series of waterfalls that cascade down a volcanic rock chute. Backed by the prominent Osorno Volcano, the falls tumble from pool to pool formed by the region's distinctive black basalt formations, beginning in the Petrohue River and ending in Todos los Santos lake. Explore the lushly forested surroundings, fed by the clear waters of the river. You can even try your hand at kayaking or rafting on certain sections of the falls with a guided tour. • A must-see in the area. The Petrohu√© are within the National Park and it is a mandatory stop. Travel is very short but worth to see the jumps that come direct from the Osorno volcano. Ideally not to go in the summer since it reduces the flow.

  • If these Puerto Varas in Llanquihue Lake, is something you must do. I recommend arriving early to avoid the hordes of tourists who arrive on buses, so is more tranquil and easy to park. You should follow all the Saints after the Lake.

  • Stunningly beautiful river, waterfalls and setting. Volcanoes in the background on a sunny day. Three different short hikes are available. One smaller lagoon with waterfall is pretty and less crowded. This is a destination for cruise travelers and can be very very crowded if they happen to be there, as was the case for us.
  • Beautiful waterfalls cascading over volcanic stones. In the background you see Osorno volcano. All very beautiful !
  • The white water rapids with the snow capped volcano Osorno is a must see. The walk to the falls is on uneven surface of volcanic rocks. Probably one of the best views of Osorno is from here.
  • One of the best landscape I've ever seen, is just breathtaking, completely worth the ride. You can drive in the "Interlagos" route and do multiple stops to get different views from the river and the volcano. Currently the treks in the park are closed so the ticket is a bit expensive just to get the panoramic view, if you drive just 3km from there you can get the same view for free and with less crowd. The rafting is a must take tour (you can hire the tour before entering the park), the sights you get from inside the river, the experience of getting in that cristal clear water, is amazing.
  • Great powerful waterfalls and beautiful pools. Orsorno volcano in the background when it appears out of the cloud. Don't bother with the food or coffee though. Terrible and expensive.

Where to stay in Puerto Varas

To enjoy views of the volcano, stay as close to the edge of Llanquihue Lake as possible. Most higher-end accommodations sit right on the lake's shores, with a range of resorts and boutique hotels offering a touch of luxury. Look a few streets back from the lake for a choice of budget hostels and small guesthouses. Reserve your place in advance to avoid disappointment, regardless of the season.
