National Park Nature / Park
Hike through South America's equivalent of a California redwoods park at Parque Nacional Alerce Andino. Though it contains many trails, rivers, and waterfalls, the highlight of the park remains the Fitzroya cypress forest, covering approximately 200 sq km (77 sq mi). Explore the many paths leading through the forest, over the rivers, and up the mountains, and admire the views of pristine nature. Keep an eye out for deer and monkey species that call this area their home. Plan your visit to Parque Nacional Alerce Andino and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Puerto Montt itinerary builder.

  • This national park is a nice option from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas, though for a day trip you need a tour or your own vehicle. There is a 3,000-year-old alerce tree that is easy to reach but don't ...  more »

  • A nice place to do simple or moderate hike. You do hear and if lucky see some interesting birds. Other than that, it is a nice hike to see the different flora species.  more »

  • Nice park. We walked to the Alerce Milenario, a very old growth cedar 12ft in diameter and very tall. Nice trail with many Tapaculos calling. This was from the southern entrance. It has a small campground and rough but doable 5 mile road in.
  • awesome hike. must do. it'd be nice if they fixed the bridge to continue the hike though.
  • Great park with an amazing forest.

  • Excellent hiking. Track "Millennial Alerce" show (full path practically plan, about 8 km round-trip, approx. three hours total, walking slowly). To reach the tree, however, there is no information about it. Missed putting a mural. The entrance to the Park until it's pretty neat, but the bathrooms are a mess (dirty, out of paper, very precarious). Entry costs 4,000 pesos for foreigners. If you arrive too late they won't let you do the trail. You have to be back at the entrance until 5 pm.
