Laguna San Rafael, Puerto Chacabuco

#1 of 10 in Sightseeing in Aisen Region
Landmark Tourist Spot
Come face to face with a 30,000-year-old glacier at Laguna San Rafael, a bioreserve located in Chile's northern ice field. Traversing the diverse landscapes of the UNESCO-protected reserve, including wetlands and a pristine rainforest, you can observe the region's main attraction, the San Valentín glacier. Reaching an imposing 4,058 m (13,313 ft), the glacier ranks as the highest point in the Southern Andes. Though trips to the reserve were previously time-consuming and expensive, the construction of a new 77 km (47 mi) road now allows for exploration of the biodiverse trails surrounding the glacier. Using our custom trip planner, Puerto Chacabuco attractions like Laguna San Rafael can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • We took the tour of the Hotel Las Loberías del Sur, tour that seemed to us very overrated, first because of the quality of the food that you serve on the barge, and by the shortness of the visit to the glacier in the zodiac, because apparently depends on the guides the duration of this, because we had the bad luck that the boat that we touched with luck gave two turns and approached very little still others came more to the glacier and the return was considerably longer. The trip back to the Hotel, was fome and boring, as guides who are supposed to had to animate the topic they dedicated themselves to be with a large group of people who had, but people who we were individually little attention they gave us, which has made it difficult for interaction with the rest. Simply this is a tour for nature watching, but not to interact with it, such as the tour of other agencies. Unfortunately we are led by the most known, which was not necessarily what we needed, it was more focused in young adult and not in senior tour.

  • There are several ways to reach the Lake, already option that I took was from Aysen and thence to Puerto Chacabuco (20 min. approximately) and board the catamaran to laguna San Rafael (located in Northern Icefields) where looks the glacier Valentine, beautiful place takes them because they inhabit also seals and birds coloring the farming community. the Tour is pretty dynamic since you can climb aboard a boat zodiac and approaching the glacier experience
