Laguna San Rafael, Puerto Chacabuco

Come face to face with a 30,000-year-old glacier at Laguna San Rafael, a bioreserve located in Chile's northern ice field. Traversing the diverse landscapes of the UNESCO-protected reserve, including wetlands and a pristine rainforest, you can observe the region's main attraction, the San Valentín glacier. Reaching an imposing 4,058 m (13,313 ft), the glacier ranks as the highest point in the Southern Andes. Though trips to the reserve were previously time-consuming and expensive, the construction of a new 77 km (47 mi) road now allows for exploration of the biodiverse trails surrounding the glacier. • We took the tour from Pto.Chacabuco with Catamaranes del Sur, where we stayed overnight at hotel Loberías del Sur. C/in they informed us that we should be in the lobby at 7 to check you and after that we reach for breakfast, since you have to row to go take the Vans that take you to the jetty, 15 pax maximum per trip, so it gives you time. Once in the boat after the routine info they give you breakfast, which is not anything spectacular but complies. The crossing lasts 10 hrs in total, can only reach a small cover that unfortunately is the place where permit smoking so while you can enjoy the landscape this is blurred by the smoke of cigarette (a pity!), before reaching the glacier offer you lunch with c good quality omida, advise them if you have any allergies or food restriction to report it in advance since the menu is unique and not give you option to choose. Once you get to the glacier and if time permits assign you groups to get off at 12 pax zodiac boats, what may be delayed if the boat is going to full capacity. If it rains you pass blankets which are very useful! The place is amazing not much closer but manage to navigate through blocks of ice blue, beautiful beautiful color! Make the most of since time is very short, approx 15 min of navigation. Then the typical, a toast with millennial ice. What I believe was a very negative point to return, and why not. Recommend Catamaranes del Sur if you are looking for is a quiet trip to enjoy the environment, since the return they offer open Bar and the second floor becomes a celebration of bad taste, with dancing (even from the guides and crew) karaoke, which I believe blurred the magical and wonderful place, should definitely reconsider the bar open since in my opinion, it is not what the majority sought to hire their services and leaves you with a bitter feeling, since it seems that you are going on a trip of 4th middle, totally unacceptable!.

  • Despite the exhausting trip sailing, time travel in the zodiac worth so much that enchanted location. You can navigate between ancient ice, enjoy the color, the immensity and Majesty, appreciate how amazing of a glacier and only can measure their size being there in front. Beautiful place. See the glaciers and icebergs is a unique experience

  • We entered a day Sunday in February and we realized account which, in total, 40 people were admitted including crew, which generates the attention to be more personalized at all times. at beginning, the climate was with rain but already entering by canal elephants I began to clear and the scenery is phenomenal. Independent of the day to bring a parka and hat when you go abroad you usually do a bit of cold, plus a good camera is recommended. the food and drinks are very good at all times, not go hungry and enjoy to the fullest the landscape of roundtrip. When you arrive at the glacier and casualties in the sodiac is a wonderful feeling also that the sodiac pattern and the charge take you very close to the glacier walking from end to end, listening to the cracking of the millenary ice. After the descent await you with whiskey on the rock and chocolate hot then continue with reel on the second floor and bar open to chacabuco. Very good experience and recommended 100%

  • Most wonderful views!
  • Special place, but it is not as advertising, the boat or the sodiak approach to the glacier, practically must be seen with binoculars, the ride is comfortable and fun

  • One of the must-see places in Chile. Very visited by Chileans and little by foreigners, is a journey through the fjords and channels in the South of the world. This journey is one of the best trips of the Southern Cone.

  • Place not to be missed, vessels fail to less than 500 meters by the risk by the blocks of ice falls, but it is majestic

  • It is National Park of greater surface in the Aysén region, with an area of 1742.000 hectares. Its main attraction recognized around the world is the San Rafael glacier, part of the northern ice field, whose detachments give rise to the lagoon of the same name. This imposing wall of ice, in the midst of lush vegetation, is the reason because thousands of visitors navigate through the fjords and channels pathogenic, to appreciate its Majesty and enjoy why not, an exquisite whisky with millenary ice.
