Santuario el Cani, Pucon

4.6
#7 of 13 in Parks in Pucon
Enjoy a range of hiking options at Santuario el Cani, one of Patagonia's most picturesque and memorable trails. The forest shelters one the world's oldest tree species, the araucaria. This private nature reserve covers an area of 607 hectares (1,500 acres), and trails here generally require a full day of trekking, so those of low fitness levels or walking experience should approach with caution. If you're up for the challenge, take the three- to four-hour trek to the highest point at the park--prepare to go uphill almost the whole way. • This sanctuary is a wonderful place, an excellent choice to connect with the ancient nature of the surroundings of Pucon. The walk is worth it completely! We went for 2 days and 1 night. We started the trip from Pucón taking the bus at 10:30 in the morning ($ 700 c/u) the journey takes 30 minutes. The next bus was leaving at 13:30, which for us was very late, because we wanted to take advantage of the day in the sanctuary. The bus drops you off at the entrance of the sanctuary, there is the Administration where you have to pay the entrance ($4 000c/u) and where you given a map, with the indication of the trail and points where you can find water to hydrate yourself. It is a unique path, and there is no option of getting lost. The first section from the Administration to the refuge sawmill, did in 2.30 hrs approx, calmly going with backpacks and equipment for camping. This stretch is rise with fed up slope, but if you're stopping and with time, it is not so terrible. Reading several posts, I had the feeling that it would be much more difficult, and the truth is that it is demanding, but it is not impossible! When you arrive at the shelter, you can install your tent inside or outside of the, we install inside the refuge, because season it is still too cold at night. In this area there is a point of water, which is in the Brook, Brook, to reach across a trunk (which is placed as a bridge) and then down a little to find water. In the afternoon went to "the Totoras lagoon", which is the next item after the Refugio Aserradero, the journey are approx. 40 min. The lagoon is frozen at this time, which is a completely different picture to what is known!. Then we returned to the refuge, to watch the sunset which is magic from that height, because Caburga and Villarrica Lake and the mountains and forest are I in between. To the next day (day 2) we did trek to the viewpoint, I recommend to go early, because after 2 pm begins to get crowded and the viewpoint is not very large. Trail touched us with snow refuge up to the mirador, 3 hours approx. of hiking in snow, we recommended us rackets, but the truth were not so useful, because the trail was well marked by the footsteps of passers-by earlier. What if I recommend and much, good shoes for trekking and gaiters waterproof, because without leggings snow equal enters shoes and end up wetting you like! The view is incredible!! from above, you can see almost 360 ° forests, volcanoes and lakes... spectacular! After both trekking, the view that you get is comforting! I'm happy to have known this place and now there are the desire to go in fall season, where the gaps are thawed and forest with autumn colors.

  • We found this rather difficult trek, we did full winter (early September) and be a sports minimum to achieve in my opinion (17 km and 1200 M in height). To get to the entrance of the Park to first take a bus from the center of Pucon. Then the entry costs 4000 pesos per person. The present guard us provided a map and explained the ascent. The first 4 kilometers to the refuge are the most difficult (very pronounced slopes) and not the most interesting (muddy forest road). Then it's much more pleasant, we are in the forest of Araucaria (protected trees that can live for more than 2000 years). We come then to 1st lagoon, she was frozen and covered with snow when we were there but very pretty. There was snow in abundance on the following parts, up to 1 m places more. We were happy to have rent in an agency in Pucon material (gaiters, Snowshoes and trekking poles, 17 000 pesos = €22 for 2 people) because the snow was soft and could sink to the waist in some places. It is good to learn about the weather conditions and the amount of snow before attempting the journey. The last part is a pretty difficult climb (big slope) for 1 km but it must be good because the mirador is located at the top. And what a view from the lookout! Breathtaking, we saw about 4 different volcanoes and several valleys. We take full eyes, really worth the effort. Then we go back down the same way. Be careful in the winter because the snow it more difficult to find (we lost 2 hours by following traces bad!). Should be, in my opinion, benefits of signage pointing the way. Put 10 h 30 round-trip (including 2 h or was lost!) to make the journey by going at a leisurely pace on the way and making several breaks. There are buses that go until 19:45 at night so that plenty of time to enjoy the trek.

  • It's not a national park, it is a sactuary and that makes a different trip than Huerquehue. It's shorter but steeper and the initial trial is very hard, imposible if raining. Watch out. But if you man...  more »

Where to stay in Pucon

As a world-renowned haven for outdoor adventurers, Pucon features a wide range of options when it comes to places to stay, though the bottom line for even budget prices is significantly higher than elsewhere in Chile. Many of the most affordable establishments are the hostels clustered in the city center, which often feature communal areas popular with the backpacker crowd. On the other end of the spectrum, you can opt for upscale lodges with their own pools, restaurants, and Wi-Fi capabilities, also within walking distance of just about any place in town. Pucon teems with adventure travelers in January and February, when prices go up and availability plummets. Make reservations ahead to avoid disappointment, or opt to go outside the height of tourist season.
