Explore Sewell Mining Town, an abandoned mining town located on the steep mountains of the Andes, sitting 2,000 m (6,562 ft) above sea level and once housing the largest underground copper mine in the world. Breathtaking panoramic mountain views consume the town wherever you look. Countless staircases intertwine the city, lined with bold colourful buildings typically painted red, blue, or yellow. Irregular shaped public squares decorated with ornamental plants mould into the landscape. Learn about the town's history from its rise to fall, and see how 15,000 inhabitants once lived in such remote and difficult surroundings. Sewell Mining Town is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Machali Edition.

  • The only city in the world between mountains, happily some buildings which are of great historical importance are still preserved. The ideal is to know it in winter when there's snow, is beautiful.

  • Tour that is worth to be done. It takes around 2 hours on a location from where it was a copper mine. The guide will explain you everything. And remember to go wrap up in summer, because in some places you enter is cold.

  • I recommend go with warm clothes because there are hundreds that make the stay very cold. A good place to learn about the history of mining in Chile.
