Trip Planner South America  /  Chile  /  Biobio Region  /  Lota
Situated just 39 km (24 mi) south of Concepcion, the city of Lota grew with the coal mining industry in the middle of the 19th century. Nationalized under Salvador Allende, then privatized again by dictator Augusto Pinochet, the mines were finally closed in the 1990s. The modern city has attempted to diversify its economy, with a growing number of attractions in Lota, and a developing tourism infrastructure. The mines now operate as a walkthrough museum, well-designed public parks highlight Lota's natural features, and local heritage museums reveal the history of the region and its people. Where to stay in Lota

As the town attempts to transition its economy from mining to tourism, accommodations in Lota remain scarce. You won't find much more than a couple of rental apartments. Consider staying in Concepcion, just 39 km (24 mi) to the north, and a regional hub of transport, commerce, and tourism. From there, you can easily reach Lota by taking the short, scenic drive along the coast.
