La Recova Municipal Market, La Serena
Categories: Flea Markets, Shopping
Roam the stalls of La Recova Municipal Market, a market and artisanal fair that dates back to the 17th century as a merchant center. The building was destroyed several times, first by a fire in 1965 and then an earthquake in the 1970s. In 1981, the present market was inaugurated by Augusto Pinochet and was, at the time, the first building with an escalator in the city. Browse the numerous stalls that line the first floor, which sell local delicacies, arts, crafts, souvenirs, and vibrant handmade jewelry. Visit the second floor for a meal at one of the restaurants, which serve traditional local dishes and fresh seafood.
