National Park Nature / Park
Adventure across an area of protected coastal and mountainous landscapes at Chiloe National Park. This 431 sq km (166 sq mi) park was established in 1982 to protect areas covered by Valdivian temperate rainforest. Explore thickly forested sections featuring perennials, shrubs, and climbers, or take a hike in the foothills of the Chilean Coastal Range, with plenty of challenging and easier walks to choose from. If you want to spot wildlife, the coastal areas are your best bet--there, you can observe a local population of blue whales and river otters. • I was pleasantly surprised. The park was well maintained, the paths easy to walk on and the bathrooms clean. It was obvious that this park was cared for. We walked for about two hours in rain. But it ...  more »

  • This is the "ranger station" for the park. There are great trails here though the forest and down to the beach. Lots of interesting information. This is the place to start if you want to explore the park. All but series hikers will find all they need here, and serious hikers can use this as a starting point or source of information.
  • A wonderful place to hike through an amazing forest and down to a wild beach. In America, the short "tourist" trails near a ranger station are rarely very long or interesting, but the two trails near the information building (CIA) in this park were great. There were both fairly long, and went through very interesting terrain, or at least it was interesting to this Norte Americano. If you like the outdoors, don't miss this part of the island, especially if it is a nice day. Don't miss the excerpt from Darwin''s journal quoted in the museum. It is in English. You can also drive a few kilometers past the CIA to find another great point to access the beach. It is just over a narrow, and very unique bridge. The buses went over the bridge, so you car can probably make it too.
  • Very beautiful place. if you are lucky you can spot a "Chucao", a very curious bird. "copihues" a type of wild flower. very easy trekking and walk trails.
  • Camping with a summer tent is not the best choice in the National Park of Chiloe. Not surprisingly, the literature warns that visitors will be at the mercy of the Pacific storms, so expect a lot of rain.
