Oficina Salitrera Santiago Humberstone, Iquique

(1,100+ reviews on the web)
Ghost Town
Once a center for 19th-century Chile's booming salt production industry, today Oficina Salitrera Santiago Humberstone stands as a ghost town. The town rose up around the saltpeter refineries; some it now functions as a museum, but most of the area remains open for you to tour on your own. Walk around and see what time has changed, visiting the homes of the workers that once hailed from Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. Most of the machines are authentic pieces that functioned during the refinery's operation. Make Oficina Salitrera Santiago Humberstone a centerpiece of your Iquique vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Iquique vacation route planner.

  • It's a good ride, full of history you have to go early we reached only to Humberstone, because it was late to go to Santa laura. In Humerstone are houses impeccable pieces there are photos and letters of the time, there are enough to walk to go comfortable, and as in the North usually there is Sun go with Hat and sunscreen. The value of the entry is $4,000 p/p, if you have student credential is cheaper.

  • A place not to be missed, is about 30 minutes from Iquique. The place is well maintained, they have restored some houses. The time to navigate it more or less is about 3 hours. Wear hat and sunscreen, since long time walking under the Sun.
