History Museum
Climb aboard a replica of the historic steam ship and learn about the history of Chile’s struggle for domination in the Pacific at Museo Corbeta Esmeralda. Built in England in 1855, the original ship saw action in both the Chincha Islands War and the War of the Pacific. In 1879, the ship was sunk during a battle with the Peruvian ironclad vessel Huáscar, but both the Esmeralda and her captain Arturo Prat earned an eternal, distinguished place in Chilean history. Today the museum gives you the chance to revisit the iconic ship, from the engine rooms to the top deck, and experience the conditions in which the sailors and the officers lived, worked, and fought. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed on board at one time, so it’s best to reserve your tour time online or by telephone at least one day in advance. A visit to Museo Corbeta Esmeralda represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Iquique itinerary maker to plot your vacation.

  • Cute ride showing part of our history. It is incredible to know a structure model of the original to see what life was like in the years of the war of the Pacific and how Chilean soldiers (along with some exrranjeros) clashed with the Peruvian, comparing the large differences in terms of ship. Interesting to attend with children that teaches them to assimilate better what is taught in schools.

  • It is a museum which is within a representation of 1:1 scale of the Corvette Esmeralda ship that was sunk in the Naval Battle of Iquique in 1879. The Museum was built to commemorate the bicentennial of Chile. It is located 5 minutes from the bus terminal in Iquique. The previous ticket purchase is necessary because the tour is guided and begins when the full set of this. In our case, we were lucky, they buy tickets at that time but we do not wait more than 10 minutes. It also has personal lockers to leave belongings. Facilities as well as the Guide are at the height of the case, travel is good describing the before, during and after the match as well as the conditions in which the crew lived inside the ship.
