Puna Pau, Hanga Roa

4.1
#3 of 23 in Things to do in Hanga Roa
Landmark Tourist Spot
Head to Puna Pau to see the land once quarried for the red scoria rock, used to make the topknot embellishments on the iconic mo'ai statues. A visit to this location teaches tourists about the effort, energy, and skill required to move such weighty slabs from the quarry to the site of the sculptures. The information panels help build a picture of how this was achieved, though the mystery about what the Rapa Nui people actually intended with these sculpture remains largely unsolved. The hill provides an extensive view of the surrounding grassy landscape, and ample walking routes allow visitors to discover different areas of the region's World Heritage-listed national park. • The site itself doesn't have many attractions. However, the explanations about building and displacement of the Pukaus are interesting to build and worship complements the Moai. It's worth it!

  • It is where the red hats were mined. So you see a few scattered around. For the rest it is not so impressive.  more »

  • A guy stood on my toe while he was trying to take a picture. It turned out to be Tom Selleck, it's hard to be mad at Magnum P.I
  • here to see factory of moai's pukao
  • Must see, the Moai hats factory! We rent a car and drove around the island. It's really easy to get to, however watch out for wild horses along the road.
  • A good viewpoint, a very green place. You can see Hanga Roa in a privileged manner and see scattered in the PUKAOS field are the hats of the MOAI

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
