Ana Kai Tangata, Hanga Roa

4.6
#4 of 13 in Outdoors in Hanga Roa
White-capped waves crash against the rocky shoreline near Ana Kai Tangata, concealing this hidden cave area. The cave is accessible at low and high tide and affords magnificent views of the coastline. A brief climb down the steps brings visitors to the cave's entrance, and further exploration reveals red and white drawings of birds on the rocky surface. The drawings were done with natural pigments and animal fat, but the cave's humidity has greatly hindered their preservation. The cave is believed to have been a meeting place for athletes taking part in the swimming competitions of the local Birdman cult. • Quick walk down to the cliffs and there’s a track down to the cave which has interesting artwork inside. It’s not very well sign posted, but apparently you’re not meant to go down there as it’s danger...  more »
  • A cave, which in principle does not say much, but if one pays attention are all the details of how they lived and worked on the same.

  • As caves go Ana Kai Tangata is less than impressive, being basically a shallow undercut in a short cliff wall on the cost, and if it was not for the paintings that are in the cave, no one would bother...  more »

  • Very cool site with several large caves. The one we could access on foot has clear cave paintings of birdmen. The extreme blue of the ocean contrasting with red, brown and black lava rocks made a dramatic site and the waves crashing on the rocks were memorising to watch. Highly recommend visiting this site. There is a nice play ground next to the site and a friendly dog was guiding the tourists on the day we visited 😊
  • It's a big cave but it's not allowed to get into the cave
  • This place has caves that were used in religious ceremonies Rapa Nui, with extremely blue waters and riots, as well as a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean and the forest. Is on the way to the trail to the Rano Kau Volcano, is worth knowing.

  • It is an excellent place to rest near the sea, during tours of the island. If you visit without tours, it is very convenient to stop there a few moments. You have to go down some stairs to reach the area of stones, where the sea enters with strength and gives some indescribable sensations. It is also to take into account, in the summer, is a cool place to refuel.
