Ana Kai Tangata, Hanga Roa
(4.4/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
White-capped waves crash against the rocky shoreline near Ana Kai Tangata, concealing this hidden cave area. The cave is accessible at low and high tide and affords magnificent views of the coastline. A brief climb down the steps brings visitors to the cave's entrance, and further exploration reveals red and white drawings of birds on the rocky surface. The drawings were done with natural pigments and animal fat, but the cave's humidity has greatly hindered their preservation. The cave is believed to have been a meeting place for athletes taking part in the swimming competitions of the local Birdman cult. Use our Hanga Roa itinerary builder to add Ana Kai Tangata and other attractions to your Hanga Roa vacation plans.

  • We find it past the airport, close to the path and the path to Rano Kau and Orongo entry. It is worth pausing a few minutes to admire the landscape and pass check inside, where you can clearly see cave paintings representing birds. There is a small staircase and is necessary to pass on some rocks to see the paintings.

  • Ana Kai Tangata has a fantastic location to see the waves blow up on the cliffs, both above and from the inside. If you are inside the cave and the waves are high, the show may frighten a little, but as the differences between the high tide and on the island at low tide, are not very large, water never enters the cave, so it is safe to be there the turquoise waters of the Pacific is magnificent.
