Ana Kai Tangata, Hanga Roa
(4.4/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
White-capped waves crash against the rocky shoreline near Ana Kai Tangata, concealing this hidden cave area. The cave is accessible at low and high tide and affords magnificent views of the coastline. A brief climb down the steps brings visitors to the cave's entrance, and further exploration reveals red and white drawings of birds on the rocky surface. The drawings were done with natural pigments and animal fat, but the cave's humidity has greatly hindered their preservation. The cave is believed to have been a meeting place for athletes taking part in the swimming competitions of the local Birdman cult. Use our Hanga Roa itinerary builder to add Ana Kai Tangata and other attractions to your Hanga Roa vacation plans.

  • One of the caves is most amazing and accessible from the island. It is believed that it was used by the native Rapa Nui to meet or provide some type of education. Ana means cave, Tangata man and Kai meet or teach. Visiting it is an interesting adventure.
