Ahu Akahanga, Hanga Roa

(4.3/5 based on 340+ reviews on the web)
Visit the reputed burial ground of Hotu Mata, legendary king of Easter Island, at Ahu Akahanga. Lying face-up on the ceremonial platform and surrounded by a circle of rocks, the solemn moai monument marking the king's grave has been weathered by centuries of exposure to the elements. Nevertheless, the monolith creates an atmosphere of solemn grandeur befitting royalty. Look for a small mound nearby, where it appears that several moai were toppled like dominoes. • The moai here are mostly collapsed. The cave is basically a cave. There is not much to see as it is unrestored. It is nonetheless an important cultural site and is worth making a quick stop.
  • This ahu has not been restored, allowing us to see the State in which the island was found
