Ahu Akahanga, Hanga Roa

4.4
#5 of 11 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
Visit the reputed burial ground of Hotu Mata, legendary king of Easter Island, at Ahu Akahanga. Lying face-up on the ceremonial platform and surrounded by a circle of rocks, the solemn moai monument marking the king's grave has been weathered by centuries of exposure to the elements. Nevertheless, the monolith creates an atmosphere of solemn grandeur befitting royalty. Look for a small mound nearby, where it appears that several moai were toppled like dominoes. • An interesting and sad place to see all the magnificent moai fallen down on their faces. Some had broken necks as well. You can also see the remains of the village and a small cave.  more »

  • The moai here are mostly collapsed. The cave is basically a cave. There is not much to see as it is unrestored. It is nonetheless an important cultural site and is worth making a quick stop.

  • Depending on the abilities of the diver, you can visit different places with low and high difficulty, which range from 12 to 80 meters. These correspond to cliffs, islets, pyramids of coral, or go to visit a moai dipped in front of the Cove, making night, deep diving, or exploration.

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
