Ahu Akahanga, Hanga Roa
(4.3/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
Visit the reputed burial ground of Hotu Mata, legendary king of Easter Island, at Ahu Akahanga. Lying face-up on the ceremonial platform and surrounded by a circle of rocks, the solemn moai monument marking the king's grave has been weathered by centuries of exposure to the elements. Nevertheless, the monolith creates an atmosphere of solemn grandeur befitting royalty. Look for a small mound nearby, where it appears that several moai were toppled like dominoes. • This is interesting not because of what is standing but because of what has fallen. The Moais lie face down and in pieces with a few red hats lying about. Are the statues down because of a tidal wave ...  more »
  • A beautiful place by the sea where you can enjoy and imagine as they lived hundreds of years ago, we see MOAI pulled down and the ruins of houses and stoves.

  • Statues on the floor were beautiful, but anyway there are better Ahu's on the island... anyway you must visit same.

  • The moai here are mostly collapsed. The cave is basically a cave. There is not much to see as it is unrestored. It is nonetheless an important cultural site and is worth making a quick stop.
  • This ahu has not been restored, allowing us to see the State in which the island was found

  • In this ahu some mohais are killed in order to land.
