Rano Raraku, Easter Island

#1 of 11 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
#Volcano, #Ruin, #Must See
Walk among iconic moai stone heads at Rano Raraku, which provides visitors with a chance to come face-to-face, literally, with impressive centuries-old monoliths. Crane your neck back to appreciate the sheer size of the site's 397 sculptures, the largest of which would stand at 21.6 m (70.9 ft) if it could be lifted upright. Gaze out from the top of the quarry, which still contains many unfinished moai sculptures, to appreciate the nearby Rano Raraku crater lake, striking with its multicolored surrounds. • No secret, the will and the muscle to a belief deep or forced service. Transport also proves it, some broke. We don't yet know mode of landslide, certainly not the mashed potatoes and still less mana... Would wood, unfortunately not found on the island, at least to deal with such an undertaking. The hat factory is disappointing, we must also recognize that the size of the room is smaller so apart from implementing, easy to achieve, and more career is on the ground. Make photos Sun declining, even more beautiful.

  • There to start saying that you should go with a comfortable shoe, and like all archaeological sites, you must be very careful about boundaries and indications. The place is impressive, the trails are well marked and, in my view, it is important to go with a guide and a good camera.

  • Rano Raraku is the mountainous, volcanic quarry from which all the Maoi along the coastline of Easter Island were carved and moved. It is the only place that my wife & I saw where the Maoi were facing...  more »

  • This is the quarry of the moais, where you can walk among the moais, with a wonderful landscape in the background. In addition, it is possible to get very close to the crater of the volcano, where there's a Lake, being one of the coolest places and interesting on the island.

  • Beautiful place, loaded with symbolism of what was the rapanui culture. Comply with the instructions of the Rangers, and not leaving the demarcated paths is recommended. At the end of the journey out of the boiler, becomes the only moai whose design is different from the others (kneeling, female podiblemente). Very beautiful, the view is spectacular, displays to the far the Ahu tongariki.

  • A quarry where all the moais of the island formed by volcanic stones without tools come from one mystery more? Beautiful view of the crater. Imptesionante!

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
