Orongo, Easter Island

4.8
#3 of 11 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
Perched high on a rim of a giant crater, Orongo served as a ceremonial center for the cult of the "Birdman," a divinity of the Rapa Nui people. The stone village features 53 windowless, round-walled buildings and a series of rocks inscribed with petroglyphs depicting curled-up human figures with birds' heads. See the cliff from which Rapa Nui chiefs jumped off into the ocean following the quest for the egg of the sacred bird that nested on the islet of Motu Nui. The path on the outskirts of the village, which disappears into the lush vegetation, will take you around the crater's edge. Take a look at our Hanga Roa trip planner to schedule your visit to Orongo and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • restored village, we go through it on a trail, under the supervision of the guides; a guided tour is nice, it helps understand the legend of the bird man and the two motus nearby. The site can be done only once; 500 pesos, very clean toilets

  • Very cool site with the most signage and information anywhere on the island. Great way to understand the birdman traditions. Accessible by car or a short hike from the volcano. Must see while on Easter island.
  • This is just a bathroom, not an archaeological site. You'll find some very comfortable stalls made out of stone men. You sit between their legs and defecate beneath them. You won't hear any of it hit anything as it is a deep deep tomb of some sort. I dropped my house keys in there but heard nothing. Do not look the bathroom janitor in the eye, yes the eye. He only has 1 and wears a patch across the other. He'll chase you off and cast spells upon you like Gozer the Destructor (Lord of the Sebouillia) and turn you into Vinz Clortho or Zuul beckoning your soul to eternal worship and evil.
  • Nice site and story about it and the small island on it southern tip.
  • ORONGO MEANS GOOD REVIEW IN ARABIAN
  • Loads of history to learn here, I wish we had of had more time as we kinda dashed round. Is free to get in if you have a national park pass which you can by as you arrive in the Island. I'd recommend you do that. As other people have mentioned the weather changes quickly. Have a jacket ready.

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
