Orongo, Easter Island
(4.7/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Perched high on a rim of a giant crater, Orongo served as a ceremonial center for the cult of the "Birdman," a divinity of the Rapa Nui people. The stone village features 53 windowless, round-walled buildings and a series of rocks inscribed with petroglyphs depicting curled-up human figures with birds' heads. See the cliff from which Rapa Nui chiefs jumped off into the ocean following the quest for the egg of the sacred bird that nested on the islet of Motu Nui. The path on the outskirts of the village, which disappears into the lush vegetation, will take you around the crater's edge. By using our Hanga Roa tour planner, you can arrange your visit to Orongo and other attractions in Hanga Roa.

  • Orongo is important not only for what represents archaeological level, but that is located in a wonderful place. The views are stunning, highlights the islets (Motu), the bigger the Motu Nui that plays a very important role in the history of this ceremonial village. Although it can be reached by car, there is a pedestrian path to rano kau which then continues to Orongo. The road is uphill, it can be tiring for those who are not in good condition.

  • Loads of history to learn here, I wish we had of had more time as we kinda dashed round. Is free to get in if you have a national park pass which you can by as you arrive in the Island. I'd recommend you do that. As other people have mentioned the weather changes quickly. Have a jacket ready.
  • Great view of the ocean and the bird man island. So much history to learn here. We enjoyed it a lot. Don't forget to bring some rain gear and warm jacket since the weather changes all the time on the island.
  • An old village of Rapa Nui people. It has a museum and beautiful views of the little Islands near Easter Island.
  • Awesome view to the volcano crater
  • Really lovely viewpoint on the rim of the volcano
