Orongo, Easter Island

(4.7/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
Perched high on a rim of a giant crater, Orongo served as a ceremonial center for the cult of the "Birdman," a divinity of the Rapa Nui people. The stone village features 53 windowless, round-walled buildings and a series of rocks inscribed with petroglyphs depicting curled-up human figures with birds' heads. See the cliff from which Rapa Nui chiefs jumped off into the ocean following the quest for the egg of the sacred bird that nested on the islet of Motu Nui. The path on the outskirts of the village, which disappears into the lush vegetation, will take you around the crater's edge. By using our Hanga Roa tour planner, you can arrange your visit to Orongo and other attractions in Hanga Roa.

  • We went on tour to the volcano Rano Kau and Orongo. He was going to do on my own but decided to tour and I have not regretted by the information you gave me of the volcano and the bird man ceremony. In the entry s Orongo is found many posters with pictures and information.

  • The town of Orongo is another of the musts to visit Rapa Nui, is full of stories and beautiful natural landscapes. It is recommended to visit it accompanied by a guide, because only that way you can truly appreciate the landscape offering Orongo. Also from here you can see the Motu's, which are small islands that face Orongo, which form an important part of the history of the island. It should be recalled that the entire island is considered national park and to visit all the archaeological sites, should always take with you the Ticket that is purchased from off the plane at Mataveri (Hanga Roa airport) or office which is located in the main avenue of Hanga Roa. For those tourists Chilean, that ticket has a value approximately of $20000. He ticket only hard some days (not remember if are 5 u 8 days starting from purchase it), by which is important check that, to the time of buy the ticket.

  • For me the ceremonial village of Orongo, in the south of the park, the most spectacular archaeological sites in the world

  • Loads of history to learn here, I wish we had of had more time as we kinda dashed round. Is free to get in if you have a national park pass which you can by as you arrive in the Island. I'd recommend you do that. As other people have mentioned the weather changes quickly. Have a jacket ready.
  • Great view of the ocean and the bird man island. So much history to learn here. We enjoyed it a lot. Don't forget to bring some rain gear and warm jacket since the weather changes all the time on the island.
  • An old village of Rapa Nui people. It has a museum and beautiful views of the little Islands near Easter Island.
  • Awesome view to the volcano crater
  • Really lovely viewpoint on the rim of the volcano
