Ana Te Pahu, Easter Island

Landmark
Gain an insight into the creation of Easter Island with a visit to Ana Te Pahu, a series of lava tunnels spanning 7 km (2.4 mi), that were formed when rock solidified around a stream of molten lava. The formations served as cave dwellings used by the island’s inhabitants to shelter from the elements. The garden by the dwellings abounds with sweet potatoes, bananas, and taro. Used as a refuge from battles as well as housing during primitive times, the caves' breadth made them convenient for inhabitants. Take a flashlight and some appropriate boots for the excursion. • Lava caves with a difference used for farming purposes these are seen at Ana Te Pahu and are a unique attraction. Must be able to walk unaided if you want to enjoy the experience.  more »
  • Endless cave, interconnected complex!, I do not know the motivoi for which the guides say that it has around 200 m, (perhaps to care for tourists as there is inside water, mud low light and fall hazard), I spent at least two hours connecting with at least 4 sets of tunnels or internal caves towards different directions. At a time when I felt some fear, (I was only and without light), and I decided to come to the surface, he had left my bike at main entrance to the cave, and went out through a hole that was at least 1 km from the main entrance... I went to go and returned same way he had undertaken to return to main entrance... Out came a group and tell the Guide, (that was not aware of connections with other caves neither of a sector full of paintings)... I think giving to explore much more this cave complex!, which is filled by the island, some without being visited mostly by above the terevaka volcano in the Northwest of the island who almost no one will!...

  • The Ana Te Pahu cave is not a must, but if you have time, it's pretty cool as adventure and exploration. It is a subterranean area composed of four cameras connected by dark corridors that served as a refuge in the bloody tribal wars that occurred between the years of 1200 and 1500. As we're going to deepen through the cave appear clearings that illuminate the environment in these bright dot some plants develop. The access road has several banana trees, so some know these as "banana's Caves".
