Ahu Vinapu, Easter Island
(4.3/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
A remarkable example of primitive stonemasonry, Ahu Vinapu holds the remains of five moai in Rapa Nui National Park, a World Heritage Site. The ahu (stone platforms) stand as some of the largest in the park and consist of huge slabs of basalt rock. When you go, look for the towering, deteriorated red-stone monolithic column, which resembles a female moai. Besides these ruins, the area is largely un-excavated and un-restored. Take care when exploring, as some stone statues only just peek out of the ground. • We were alone on this site! Nestled in the hollow of Rano Kau and close to the runway of the airport, it's a site where you can discover great pukao on the ground, as well as an oversized moai head!

  • Close to the airport. as attraction its Stockade of stone that recalls and has sparked theories of Inca colonization. Statue of woman who had two heads

  • This Ahu remained such as we discovered the first explorers and contributed to the thesis of Thor Heyerdahl that the settlement of the island would come from Latin America and specifically the Incas?

  • We decided to walk here which is quite a mission. I'd recommend you go by car but get a 4x4 as there is not much of a road leading up to this place. The weather has taken its toll on these constructions, its still impressive though.
  • Really cool big stone wall construction. It reminded me of the stone walls around Cusco, Peru. It makes me wonder how this kind of knowledge was passed around in the ancient word.
  • the incas came up here... evidenced by these structures

  • The architecture of the Ahu is almost identical to the Inca.
