Ahu Vinapu, Easter Island

4.2
#8 of 11 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
A remarkable example of primitive stonemasonry, Ahu Vinapu holds the remains of five moai in Rapa Nui National Park, a World Heritage Site. The ahu (stone platforms) stand as some of the largest in the park and consist of huge slabs of basalt rock. When you go, look for the towering, deteriorated red-stone monolithic column, which resembles a female moai. Besides these ruins, the area is largely un-excavated and un-restored. Take care when exploring, as some stone statues only just peek out of the ground. • You really should have a guide here who can relate to you the differences in the two ahus and to tell you about the female statue nearby. The more recent ahu, which was built in the style of the Incas...  more »
  • Possibly not worth going out of your way for, for us it was a starting point for a hike up to Ranu Kao, but the Incan style stone work is an interesting mystery.  more »
  • The Ahu Vinapu area was one of my favorite Moai locations, mainly due to the architecture. There are three platforms (Ahu) at this location, Vinapu, Tahira and a third Ahu located within the fuel tank...  more »

  • I wish there were more signage / info. Might be worth visiting with a guide to get the full picture.
  • Not the best Ahu on the island, but I bet you'll be the only one there and you can ponder the mysteries of the universe as you gaze out across the ocean.
  • We decided to walk here which is quite a mission. I'd recommend you go by car but get a 4x4 as there is not much of a road leading up to this place. The weather has taken its toll on these constructions, its still impressive though.
  • This is a place of originality wow
  • Really cool big stone wall construction. It reminded me of the stone walls around Cusco, Peru. It makes me wonder how this kind of knowledge was passed around in the ancient word.

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
