Ahu Vinapu, Easter Island

4.3
#7 of 11 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
Ruin Historic Site
A remarkable example of primitive stonemasonry, Ahu Vinapu holds the remains of five moai in Rapa Nui National Park, a World Heritage Site. The ahu (stone platforms) stand as some of the largest in the park and consist of huge slabs of basalt rock. When you go, look for the towering, deteriorated red-stone monolithic column, which resembles a female moai. Besides these ruins, the area is largely un-excavated and un-restored. Take care when exploring, as some stone statues only just peek out of the ground. • In the area of the site has no Moai too to present. But the visit becomes a must from the time you can see one of the only female on the island Moai. In addition, there is a wall with the stones embedded in the inca style of Cusco. What we raise questions about who learned from who, or if it was just coincidence. Is very worthwhile!

  • Near the city and airport as all the places, I advise you to look at. It's hard to speak my mind about each of the island's attractions. just need to see

  • Culturally speaking, it's one interesting ite because it has parts with the old way of doing for the sculpture of the Moais. More rounded including. For the rest, the platforms and the Moais.

  • We decided to walk here which is quite a mission. I'd recommend you go by car but get a 4x4 as there is not much of a road leading up to this place. The weather has taken its toll on these constructions, its still impressive though.
  • Really cool big stone wall construction. It reminded me of the stone walls around Cusco, Peru. It makes me wonder how this kind of knowledge was passed around in the ancient word.
  • incas like wall
  • The ceremonial center of Vinapu includes one of the largest ahu in Rapa Nui. This ceremonial center has an extraordinary platform, whose structure is composed of large basalt slabs made carefully, fit similarly to some Inca constructions in Cusco. There are about 300 ahu on the island between those dimensions are variable, thus the construction technique and the number and size of the MOAI.

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
