Ahu Te Pito Kura, Easter Island

(4/5 based on 240+ reviews on the web)
On a rugged stretch of coastline, find Ahu Te Pito Kura, the largest moai ever made, and one of the few whose name has not been lost over time. Unfortunately, the monolith faces the floor, having been toppled along with the other moai during the Rapa Nui civil wars. Still, the monument's size is impressive--10 m (33 ft) tall and weighing around 70 tons--as are the stories that surround him. Located close by in the same site, find a large, polished oval rock, surrounded by a low stone wall. Its high iron content confuses compasses, and some believe it to be charged with a powerful mystical energy. With our online itinerary creator, Hanga Roa attractions like Ahu Te Pito Kura can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • This place is the exact point of the navel of the world, which is represented by a round stone, which is surrounded by other four stones indicating the four cardinal points. Te Pito Kura is the last moai Ahu, as his only statue is the largest moai ever moved and erected on an ahu successfully (it has approximately 10 meters).

  • "The magnetic stone" tour guides and local people know very well the meaning and origin of the stone. I leave it to visit it. Highlight the cleaning of the place and the landscapes that are present in the place.

  • Pito Kuru taken by itself is not worth your time but as a part of a two day guided experience of Easter Island, it fits right in. Its name means " the altar of the last Moai." Here you will also see a...  more »
