Ahu Te Pito Kura, Easter Island

On a rugged stretch of coastline, find Ahu Te Pito Kura, the largest moai ever made, and one of the few whose name has not been lost over time. Unfortunately, the monolith faces the floor, having been toppled along with the other moai during the Rapa Nui civil wars. Still, the monument's size is impressive--10 m (33 ft) tall and weighing around 70 tons--as are the stories that surround him. Located close by in the same site, find a large, polished oval rock, surrounded by a low stone wall. Its high iron content confuses compasses, and some believe it to be charged with a powerful mystical energy. • At first seems an Ahu more with their Moai, but not; It holds the mystery of the magnetic stone in a civilization that knew no metals.

  • Power spot. It cites all over the island, but that power spot. I was surprised, too close to the sea.

  • Bit of a journey to get to this one on the other side of the island. We tied it into a visit to Anakena beach and it worked out really well. Massive moai collapsed which is really interesting to see.  more »

  • I recommend visiting with a guide - without one we didn't get a lot of of this site. The only sign talked about the one moai statue. It is the largest moai that was successfully moved and erected on the island, later toppled over.
  • strange!!!
  • Worth a stop before Anakena beach !
  • Here was the site of a group, one of the world centres (also known as the navel of the Earth), the biggest and largest MOAI MOAI hat. I remember there was a chicken coop.

  • Music and dance are fundamental elements of the Rapa Nui culture and its varieties are an inescapable attraction for those who visit Easter Island. Therefore, that they have prepared a show that brings together the highest exponents of the Rapa Nui culture, adding colorful bodies of dance with ensembles of long history.

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
