Ahu Nau Nau, Easter Island

4.7
#7 of 11 in Historic Sites in Easter Island
One of the most important moai archeological sites on Easter Island, Ahu Nau Nau boasts seven ancient statues restored to their former glory in 1980 by Sergio Rapu. Located on the golden sand of Anakena Beach, these monoliths have enjoyed better preservation than most over time, as sand accumulated by wind kept them partly buried for a long time. Survey the red coral topknots perfectly placed on the heads of the four larger statues. Head behind the moai to observe some ancient petroglyphs representing the legendary lizard man, a figure of folklore among Easter Island inhabitants. • This Ahu, located in Anakena beach is the most complete and detailed of all the others. All the Moai are in (almost) perfect condition and have their Pukao. Close to the Ahu, has pictogriflos and traces of what was a House, or another altar. Enjoying the ride, it's worth getting his feet wet (or a mergilho) in fresh waters of Anakena, make a Pina Colada in the restaurants and, if you're hungry, eat a tuna Empanadas-delicious!

  • The main reason for our visit was a "time-off" from the Moais and a few hours at the beach. Beautifully set; the waves were perfect for body-surfing, the sand quite nice.  more »
  • This collection of Moai is one of the most perfect that you'll encounter on the Island. They are set on a lovely beach location, and most are fitted with topknots, indicating personages of importance.  more »

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
