Ahu Akivi, Easter Island

4.5
#12 of 51 in Things to do in Easter Island
See the sacred Ahu Akivi, a religious site on Easter Island that contains seven moai stone figures carved between the 13th and 17th centuries. The identical human-like statues were discovered in 1955 and restored in 1960 by a team of American and Chilean archaeologists. The statues have an astronomic importance, facing the sunset during the vernal equinox and showing their backs to the sunrise during the autumnal equinox. A visit to Ahu Akivi represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Hanga Roa vacation builder to plot your vacation.

Ahu Akivi provides one of the most breathtaking examples of the Moai on Easter Island. It is told that they are representative of the seven explorers who came to the island to make way for the King Ho...  more »

The site is a must for the simple fact of having the only statues facing the ocean. The reason that I'm not going to reveal not to suck the fun out of a tour of the site. You can link this with access to the highest point of the island, Terevaka, whose entrance is a few meters. You can use the bathroom (surcharge) and a cup of juice or eat something at the kiosk next to the entrance. Free parking.

Peaceful location. Toilet inside the store here is expensive. Try to avoid it.

The only moais on the island that are looking out towards the ocean. The roads to get to these ones are pretty poor but all good in a 4x4.

Where to stay in Hanga Roa

The main urban area on the island, Hanga Roa houses the vast majority of Easter Island's accommodations. While the number of choices remains pretty limited considering the island's popularity, the range of lodgings suits a variety of travelers, from budget-conscious backpackers to those seeking luxury. Relaxed guesthouses and hostels provide decent rooms to get your head down for the night after a long day's exploration. Eco-lodges and more exclusive hotels tend to be positioned outside of the main urban area, providing airport pick-up services, ocean views, and swimming pools.
