(3.7/5 based on 25+ reviews on the web)
The San José Mine is a small copper-gold mine located near Copiapó, Atacama Region, Chile. The mine became known internationally for its collapse in 2010, which trapped 33 miners 700m underground. Its workings are reached by a long sloping roadway with many spiral turns, not by a vertical mineshaft.HistoryThe San José Mine is located 45 kilometers northwest of Copiapó. It began to be operated in 1889. In 1957, Jorge Kemeny Letay, a Hungarian immigrant founded the San Esteban Mining Company (Compañía Minera San Esteban).According to Terra, the mine's annual sales surpassed 20 million dollars.Between 2003 and 2010, several mining accidents occurred in the mine, causing at least three deaths. In 2007, a geologist was killed in the mine, and led to its closure. It was reopened in May 2008 by SERNAGEOMIN – Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería (National Geology and Mining Service). In July 2010, miner Gino Cortés lost one of his legs in an accident.2010 accidentCompañía Minera San Esteban advised national authorities on 5 August 2010 that a collapse had occurred at 14:00 local time, and rescue efforts began the next day. National Emergencies Office of Chile reported that day a list of 33 trapped and possibly deceased miners, that included Franklin Lobos, a retired footballer, and Carlos Mamani, a Bolivian miner. The miners were found alive 17 days later, on August 22. Nonetheless, it was not until 69 days after the collapse on October 13, 2010, that the first miner, Florencio Ávalos, was rescued.

  • We went with a group of colleagues in the company as part of our work of "team building". We met lone mine and several remnants of the crash and subsequent rescue. It is exciting and powerful hear from one of the 33, his testimony of how lived those 70 days. Need more information and infrastructure to make it a true tourist attraction. However a visit worth.

  • Curiosity I felt when I was told that it was near the famous mine San jose, and even though today one of the 33 miners make the tour and tells the story of what happened. It is a few kilometres from English Bay, a 30 min drive, road, road is land, rather sand and you can go on any type of vehicle. Bring water to drink or there is nothing but desert!

  • It is somewhere that if these in Copiapo must visit, is 40 minutes by car from boiler, on route 5 truth is that it is not signposted exit, if you want to get via waze recommend you search the copec of route 5 in boiler, out in the there same copec give realized there is a path to the ridge that leads to the San Jose mine. What surprised me was that the person who makes you the tour is one of the miners Don Jorge Galleguillos, it all starts with a video where revives the news that came through television of everything that was going on, the truth is that he excites relive everything that happened in those days. If you want the tour you have to pay $5000 and takes you to all major points of history, also give you a small gift for you to take souvenir. If you do not pay the tour you can take photos where rose camp hope and on the 33 flags representing each of the miners.
