La Portada, Antofagasta

(4.2/5 based on 750+ reviews on the web)
A reminder of what early seafarers faced upon reaching the South American coastline, La Portada is one of fifteen protected natural monuments in Chile. The rock arch is just over 40 m (140 ft) high and 70 m (230 ft) long, featuring a black andesite base and layers of shell fossils dating back several million years. Dramatic coastal cliffs surround the arch and act as a significant observation site for indigenous birds including Peruvian booby, kelp gulls, pelicans, cormorants, and Inca terns. Occasionally, visitors also spot dolphins and South American fur seals. • Cute, but the site leaves much to be desired. Sale of something are abandoned and in disrepair. Only the photo of rigor and the ride is ready.

  • If you do not go through the cover of Antofagasta, it is difficult to prove your visit, but if raisins not passes nothing, is not a place that has a great attraction, is practically to photograph on their catwalks, exploit more that tourist place and representative of the city

  • I knew that if I was not going to the front page it was as not having gone to Antofagasta. And I much heat that did, I started to go it alone. I indicated in Sernatur Antofagasta that from the Center leaving buses every half hour from the Terminal Megatur ranging to mussels, for I had to get out in the middle of route 1 at the intersection of La Portada, walk 2 km and both to the viewpoint of the monument and was shocked. You don't see it above, but many meters, but the combination between the blue of the sea, and the contrast with the greyish yellow soil and the same stone formation, makes you believe that you're in a postcard of magazine. The place, for the time being, has no bathrooms, no craft stalls, or restoration, so finally not reach to be more than half an hour (at least in my case) but can delight for long minutes of a wonderful show in the middle of the arid ground out.
