La Portada, Antofagasta

4.1
A reminder of what early seafarers faced upon reaching the South American coastline, La Portada is one of fifteen protected natural monuments in Chile. The rock arch is just over 40 m (140 ft) high and 70 m (230 ft) long, featuring a black andesite base and layers of shell fossils dating back several million years. Dramatic coastal cliffs surround the arch and act as a significant observation site for indigenous birds including Peruvian booby, kelp gulls, pelicans, cormorants, and Inca terns. Occasionally, visitors also spot dolphins and South American fur seals. • Without services to tourists, very nice viewpoints, but all abandoned and sectors not open to the public. It can be exploited much further. The visit is a must, if you're in Antofagasta, very close. You arrive by car. Instead you demorás about 1 hour to go through it.

  • Beautiful! It's easy to see why this place is so famous. You can see Antofagasta in the distance. There are many types of birds here. Often, they will fly below you, giving you a rare top-down view of a bird in flight.
  • Nice rock formation, nice landmark, to spend a couple of minutes.
  • Easy access to beautiful coast scenery and close to the city center.
  • Beautiful view. Unfortunately you cannot go down to the beach anymore as it is a conservation area but still worth the trip to see.
  • Antofagasta Natural monument , beautiful. Needs more attention from local authorities to restore the access to it
