Desierto de Atacama, Antofagasta

(380+ reviews on the web)
Landmark
The driest non-polar desert in the world, Desierto de Atacama remains one of the harshest environments on the planet. Extreme and otherworldly, with barren topography and stony terrain, the desert has been used to film scenes in movies set on Mars. The area hosts a surprising variety of animals and plant life, with several species of bird--including flamingos and hummingbirds-- found around the salt flats. Roads connect most of the major attractions, and a range of tour options are available to visitors looking for a dash of adventure. The conditions are harsh, but it is this very harshness that makes the desert such a memorable place to visit. Put Desierto de Atacama at the forefront of your travel plans using our Antofagasta holiday planner.
