Desierto de Atacama, Antofagasta
(4.6/5 based on 340+ reviews on the web)
The driest non-polar desert in the world, Desierto de Atacama remains one of the harshest environments on the planet. Extreme and otherworldly, with barren topography and stony terrain, the desert has been used to film scenes in movies set on Mars. The area hosts a surprising variety of animals and plant life, with several species of bird--including flamingos and hummingbirds-- found around the salt flats. Roads connect most of the major attractions, and a range of tour options are available to visitors looking for a dash of adventure. The conditions are harsh, but it is this very harshness that makes the desert such a memorable place to visit. Put Desierto de Atacama at the forefront of your travel plans using our Antofagasta holiday planner.

  • The Atacama desert is one of those places you feel outside the planet Earth. Incredible scenery, fantastic rides, and a great life experience. A stay of a week is enough to meet the best attractions of the place. I advise everyone to do the walks through a tour agency.
