Pico Do Fogo, Cha das Caldeiras

4.6
#3 of 11 in Nature in Cape Verde
Cape Verde's highest peak, Pico Do Fogo dominates the island from a height of 2,829 m (9,281 ft). An active volcano, this mountain can only be climbed with a guide--a trip to the top takes you through a caldera village and across an otherworldly landscape of alternating volcanic ash and lush vegetation. As you climb, look for cultivated patches on which the locals grow bananas, coffee, papaya, and beans. • The main or even the only activity is hiking, but what rando! Pace up and down the sides of this very active volcano allows to cross lunar landscapes of great beauty, especially when we go down the little Pico, a small crater located on the flanks of the Pico Grand. Do not miss either the ride in the village of Cha das calderas, which was buried by lava in the eruption of 2014. Edifying.

  • This unique place offers a very different side of the Cape Verde. Different eruptions still visible lava trails, Black Rock, the Bordeira located all around give a sumptuous almost lunar landscape punctuated by the green of local cultures (wine, pomegranates, tomatoes...). Ascension may seem impressive, but is not so difficult with a guide! A without hesitation!

  • Alone the Caldeira with its volcanoes and lava flows is worth the trip. For the strenuous ascent, it is worth because of the heat very early (6: 00) to start. A guide is compulsory and also make sense. The descent we commonly described as a "easy", but our trip has rained the previous day, as a result, the lava sand was compact and less soft than usual. Not to mention that moving in Africa, and are in an emergency African strong rescue measures available, i.e. No ambulance and certainly not a helicopter.

  • Beautiful hike up to the summit. A guide is not really necessary (you can follow the other hikers with guides) but it is not a bad thing to support the locals. Be aware of false tracks made by the guides! Normally the ascent runs through rocky ground and not through loose gravel.
  • Nice place I love this... I want visit this
  • This is not the volcano. A long time ago, This volcano was 10x as high. It was so high and so steep it collapsed. The amount of material dumped into the ocean made a tsunami 200 ft tall. You can see the crater and you can see where parts of the island collapsed. I find it really neat that the magma has already made a new mini volcano in its place.
  • Fogo is an active stratovulcano that erupted as recently as 2014. The views are amazing but it's true that getting to top will require some effort. Fogo will test your endurance ;) I didnt have a guide - and at least once I came to a dead end and had to backtrack. Apart from random boulders that sometimes come down with massive speed I dont think there are many risks involved. You might also see some smoke / fumes on top.
