Frame Lake Trail, Yellowknife

4.5
#2 of 8 in Parks in Yellowknife
Frame Lake is located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. It is an 84ha endorheic freshwater body located between the city's downtown section and a larger residential area. The Frame Lake Trail circles it, and city hall and the territorial legislative assembly building are on its shores.Formed by meltwater after the end of the Wisconsin glaciation 20,000 years ago, Frame has been an important part of Yellowknife's history. The Dene in the area used it as a fishing spot before European settlement. In the early years of the city's growth, gold mines nearby dumped tailings in it and sometimes sewage. Later, when the city's New Town, now its downtown section, was surveyed and developed nearby, Frame offered accessible swimming and boating opportunities. However, storm sewers diverted much of the runoff that fed it. Later development blocked the lake's only outflow, leaving it endorheic and complicating the problems caused by earlier pollution. By the early 1970s it no longer supported any fish; within two decades residents had stopped swimming or boating it out of fear of leeches. Subsequent studies have shown that the lake completely eutrophied sometime in the mid-1990s. They have not, however, been able to determine whether that was due to climate change, pollution or some combination of both; the possibility exists that the lake has always been at a higher trophic state than others in the area.

  • It is is a few minutes from the city centre but quiet and nice walking paths. Trails are well maintained and you can walk.

  • During the day time I had tried circling counterclockwise. It took almost 2 hours sometimes stops and take pictures without taking a degree break together I actually walked 2 hours and was told if you get the map at the Heritage Center time to hear. Please note that the trail is no restroom isn't in. And indeed around pretty changes in the landscape. Also there is no trail or large rocks or wooden stairs on the way, also have explanations of the vegetation and the flora and fauna in some places, especially losing your way. However, maps and trail in here every point where information is not in the signpost non-branching, so keep downloading a Smartphone with GPS and Google maps offline at all times now know the position and is safe. Please make sure that passes near a building under construction in the southern part of little is easy, but key landmarks so don't miss out. Also, bike and share some parts and so considerably speed will come out here attention is required. People who pass each other in the early hours of the afternoon we walked almost locals, which doubles as a dog Walker. Maybe I'd avoided but didn't see one especially suspicious person, walk only by women. If you can spare the time please take a look at try walking. Again walk for 2 hours and the sense of accomplishment. Only colours were green, office buildings and the contrast was very impressive.

  • Three of us walked along this trail all around Frame Lake. It is beautiful! It is about 9 km long, but relatively easy hiking as long as you are wearing appropriate footwear. Stopped along the way to ...  more »
