#3 of 11 in Outdoors in Waterton Lakes National Park
Take a short but strenuous climb to Bear's Hump and you will be rewarded with spectacular views of glistening lakes, rolling prairies, and towering mountain peaks. Arguably the most popular hike in Waterton Lakes National Park is also the steepest, ascending 240 m (787 ft) in just over 1 km (0.6 mi) before ending at the "Hump," which will make you feel like standing on top of the world. Take a wind jacket with you--it can get windy at the top. • This hike is not for the faint of heart. It is short, but quite steep, so those who are not willing to sweat should not attempt this. Once at the top, the views are second to none. A definite must!  more »
  • Don't think this is an easy hike unless you're an avid hiker. It's only 9/10 of a mile up, but I do mean up! But the view is remarkable, especially if you happen to be staying in Waterton Village or t...  more »
  • Hiked the Bear Hump trail this past May. Took about 30 minutes to get up and 20 minutes to get down. Rather steep but very well maintained and well worth the effort. Often very windy on top, so hold o...  more »

  • A must do hike. A great quick uphill for a quick cardio session. Good view down the lake.
  • If there's one hike you have to do while you're at Waterton, it's Bears Hump. The incline is about 90 degrees, but it's pretty short, so you hardly notice it. The view from the top is absolutely spectacular. It's a great introduction to the area or a great spot to go for nostalgia a hundred visits later.
  • May not be a long hike, but it is steep. The view is the best there is of the town of Waterton.
  • Amazing view at the top! Worth the hike up to it!
  • Hard climb but the view...! Recommended!!

Where to stay in Waterton Lakes National Park

You can't stay in the heart of Waterton Lakes National Park, so your best bet is to base yourself in the township of Waterton and head on day trips from there. This can be difficult if you're on a budget, as the majority of accommodations in Waterton are resorts, hotels, and suites catering to a luxury-seeking clientele. If you're prepared to battle it out against nature, you can make your trip more affordable by pitching a tent at a local campsite. Make your reservations well in advance if visiting between May and September.
