Government House, Victoria
Categories: Government Buildings, Architectural Buildings, Nature & Parks, Tourist Spots
Visit Government House, official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and the Canadian monarch--often referred to as the "ceremonial home of all British Columbians." Completed in 1959, the modern Tudor Revival building replaced an earlier incarnation destroyed in a fire in 1957 (itself a replacement for a mansion destroyed by fire in 1899). The 14.6 hectare (36 acre) grounds divide into different themed sections, such as a garden dedicated to British Columbia native plant life, and one with a mixture of ornamental and edible plants. Step inside to see its impressive interiors, and learn about the role of the Lieutenant Governor and the monarchy in Canadian political life. I dig government house. The gardens rival buchart I think and are run by volunteers! There's tours two weeks a month. Sometimes there are conferences, and there's a restaurant at the Carry Castle mews. There's a costume museum and some chickens here!
We only visited the gardens. They were beautiful, expansive, and super fun for the kids even!
Beautiful grounds, and a spectacular costume exhibit. Dresses dating back to the early 1900s in amazing condition.
Beautiful gardens and grounds, great for a walk!
Grounds are incredible! South facing slope for sunshine and views! This is the best place in Victoria for early spring flowers!
