Government House, Victoria

4.6
#5 of 28 in Parks in Victoria
Visit Government House, official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and the Canadian monarch--often referred to as the "ceremonial home of all British Columbians." Completed in 1959, the modern Tudor Revival building replaced an earlier incarnation destroyed in a fire in 1957 (itself a replacement for a mansion destroyed by fire in 1899). The 14.6 hectare (36 acre) grounds divide into different themed sections, such as a garden dedicated to British Columbia native plant life, and one with a mixture of ornamental and edible plants. Step inside to see its impressive interiors, and learn about the role of the Lieutenant Governor and the monarchy in Canadian political life. • I love visiting here regularly as it is always changing. The iris show is quite spectacular as well as the rhodos and other flowering bushes. The best free to view garden in Victoria in my opinion.  more »
  • The manicured grounds are beautiful, the trees, plants and flowers are amazing. This is a wonderful place to visit, and being free of entrance fee is a bonus. It is just a 10 minutes walk from Craigda...  more »
  • This is a great place to visit. The tours are free Friday to Sunday and are done with a tour leader. They are interesting and informative. Afterwards enjoy a walk around the gardens.  more »

  • This is a beautiful place to stop on a walk through the lovely and historic neighborhood of Rockland. Well I have been inside, it is the grounds of this place that I love the most. There is now a tea room that has limited hours. There is a chicken coop. There are several resident cats. The gardens are always lovely, but especially in the spring and summer. There are public washrooms available for use when the grounds are open during the day. Free admission to grounds.
  • The grounds are always changing and the various different events held here have been very interesting so far. I highly recommend visiting this place and bringing your camera!
  • Beautiful grounds and a great quiet historic sight to visit if you don’t like crowds.
  • Beautiful grounds to take a wander. We also tired the house which was really interesting. They had staff in each area to explain the history of each room which was really informative. There is also a lovely tearoom and display of costumes. For Canada 150 they had music in the park on Thursday nights. It was excellent on our visit.
  • One of my favourite gardens in the city!
