Vanier Park, Vancouver
(4.5/5 based on 45+ reviews on the web)
Vanier Park is a municipal park located in the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is home to the Vancouver Museum, the Vancouver Maritime Museum, the City of Vancouver Archives, and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre.HistoryThe Squamish people and their kin, the Tsleil-Waututh. Musqueam and Squamish/Tsleil-Waututh established a brief political unity in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century by Chief August Jack, aka Qahtsahlano, who inherited the chieftaincy of both peoples and established his residence at Snauq at the mouth of False Creek, now Vanier Park just west of the Burrard Bridge, rather than choose between residence at the Capilano Reserve or at Musqueam, as either of those would have had political implications for the one not chosen.Once a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) station, Number 7 Supply Depot, the site was turned over to the Vancouver Park Board by the Federal Government on October 28, 1966. Named for former Governor General of Canada Georges Vanier, the park officially opened on May 30, 1967. The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and the Vancouver Museum complex opened in 1968, thanks to lumber baron MacMillan’s $1.5 million donation.

  • I stopped by when Vania Park is from Granville Island was walking towards the Kitsilano. I was unique and odd metal crab in the fountain in front of the h.r. MacMillan Space Centre said. It is interesting just to see the crab out of time and could not be admitted to the building. A little to the Maritime Museum. River Falls is a unique boat was moored.

  • Beautiful park with awesome views of Downtown Vancouver and False Creek. Vancouver Museum and HR MacMillan Space Centre (with a great planetarium) is only two minutes walking. Also the awesome Maritime Museum can be visited while you are there. During summer months you can watch excellent plays at “Bard on the Beach” [ google it! :) ]
  • Vanier park is a small city park between the maritime museum, planetarium and a short walk from Granville island. Best spot in the city for kite flying and to see the fireworks! A short walk to Cornwall if you need food or snacks, public washrooms nearby.
  • Nice walk from Granville Island 3K round trip. Medium pace 15 mins. each way. Great museum!
  • Fly a kite. Go for a walk. Enjoy the park. Great view of Vancouver downtown.
  • Plan before you come here as it's a little tricky to get to. Nice views. Planetarium, Bard on the Beach nearby.
