#6 of 10 in Childrens Museums in Ontario
The Canadian Air and Space Museum was an aviation museum that was located in Toronto, Ontario, featuring artifacts, exhibits and stories illustrating a century of Canadian aviation heritage and achievements. The museum was located in a hangar that once housed the original de Havilland Canada aircraft manufacturing building, but in September 2011 the museum and all of the other tenants in the building were evicted by the landlord, the Crown Corporation, PDP . The site was slated for redevelopment as a new sports centre but after closing the museum the development was placed on hold. The museum is developing a new location and its collections are currently not available for public viewing.Located in what is now known as Downsview Park, the hangar was later appropriated by the Royal Canadian Air Force as a part of RCAF Station Downsview, and then later as CFB Toronto, which was closed in April 1996. On September 20, 2011, after the order to vacate the premises, the museum's collection was transferred to forty-four, 40-foot freight containers and stored in a parking lot on the Greater Toronto Airports Authority property in Toronto. When it was active the institution was largely run by volunteers and had the goal of educating visitors on the Canadian aerospace industry and technology. It is a registered Canadian non-profit organization.

Inside and out has proved to be a huge space with exhibits, and aircraft mock-ups. Learned a lot of scientific and simply curious information. A big plus of this museum was that for some aircraft might climb.

Was very well kept and the staff/pilots were very happy to talk about which planes. We travelled from the UK to see the one of two airworthy Lancaster bombers in Canada. Amazing!  more »

Was in the Trenton/Bellville area and decided to visit Canadian Air & Space Museum. Greeted by an actual pilot who gave a short overview of the museum and answered many questions on planes and life in...  more »

Unfortunately this place will soon get bulldozed because the administrators of Downsview Park have been paid off by an American company to turn the site into a hockey rink. They have consistently refused to provide an answer as to why the rink has to be on that particular site, instead of somewhere else in the area. Instead of simply building somewhere else they want to spend a lot of money to tear down a building before putting up another. The Conservative government is also in on it, because they removed the historical designation for the building, without any notice or explanation. Someone, for some unknown reason, wants to destroy the ability to remember and teach Canadian aviation history, and any ability to preserve it's artifacts.

Usually not really interested in that stuff but it was fun for me

This museum is a hidden gem, that few people seem to know about. The staff can tell you the history of the museum, as a manufacturing plant for early aircraft as well as provide details of Canadian aviation history. They have the light craft used in the real story that 'Fly Away Home' is based on, a replica of the Avro Arrow and an aircraft that can fly by flapping it's wings, literally. It is a fascinationg place and I highly recommend a visit.
