#5 of 6 in Trails in Tofino
Lone Cone is a mountain located 6km north of Tofino and 7km northwest of Mount Colnett on the western peninsula of Meares Island, British Columbia, Canada. The mountain has always been a noticeable landmark to all inhabitants with its looming presence on the north end of Meares Island. The early pioneers believed that if there were clouds blocking the summit then there would be approaching good weather.Lone Cone is composed of igneous rock of the Catface Intrusions. These are masses of quartz diorite that intruded the Westcoast Crystalline complex. At least one of them has been dated, at about 41 million years old.

  • The view from the top is beautiful. The hike is very athletic and sometimes even turns into climbing. I do not recommend for large asthmatics. Count at least 6: 00 if you want to take your time at the top and if you do not have the habit of sports efforts. When I went there, the entire first part of the path was muddy (to consider). I slept on the island at the youth hostel, price the watertaxi and hiking access was included ($ 30/night) so I didn't think it was expensive and it was worth!

  • Although it well inquired with embarking on this Trail, expected not to such a climb. We are both very sporty and this is clearly part of the more physical effort that you have made! We should therefore not underestimate the "promenade". The first km esf fairly soft but subsequently rises vertically. The path is muddy and full of roots and trees. The view is incredible and plunges on every island around Tofino. Breathtaking! Although it must be wary of the clouds. Finally, we wonder why pay so much? 10CAD pp. pr the Trail, plus taxi... a little overpriced!

  • You do not need to be an experienced hiker to do this hike. You just need to be an athlete and strong minded. Not for someone with bad knees however. Bring: 3L of water per person Day bag Lunch for th...  more »

  • Amazing views after quite a tough hike.
  • The effort required to get from bottom to top is well worth the expansive view on the peak!
  • Really gorgeous forest trail, epic ascent, and ridiculously beautiful views at the top.
  • It's kind of hard to give a rating for this hike hahaha. It almost killed me but the views were phenomenal. I would recommend making sure you have proper gear, including proper hiking boots, and do *not* underestimate the amount of water you need. We are slightly out of shape, in experienced hikers and we neglected both of these things and suffered for it. While we got up to the top in fair time, coming down was a huge challenge, made much worse by the fact that we had drank the last of our water on the ascent. The result was a shaky and arduous climb down that took us longer than it took to get up, and sore muscles that lasted for days after the hike. That said, the view at the top was absolutely stunning (for real, look at the photo) and completing this hike came with a huge sense of accomplishment and a funny memory of our own incompetence to look back on haha. So, bottom line: be honest with yourself about your level of fitness, take 3 times the amount of water that you think you need, take it slow and break often, and go properly equipped for the hike.
  • Demoroso rail and complicated, with many parts of mud and other very high inclination. In addition to the cost of travel by boat to the island, it is necessary to pay the Indians to stay on the island. The journey to the top and back lasts about 6-7 hours. The view from the top is very pretty, but I'm sure that the effort is not worth the reward. There are best attractions in Tofino and surroundings that require less physical preparation.
