The Grotto, Tobermory

4.6
Gaze upon the turquoise waters of The Grotto, a secluded sea cave carved out of the rocky cliffs over thousands of years. A short hike is required to reach the grotto--those with a fear of heights should take caution, as you'll need to climb down a 12 m (40 ft) natural rock chimney to access it. From above, enjoy the views of the rocky cliffs and the ocean beyond, while sunlight from outside reveals a brilliant underwater tunnel. You can snorkel in the pristine setting, and use the opportunity to capture some brilliant photographs. Make The Grotto a centerpiece of your Tobermory vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Tobermory online trip maker .

  • The grotto was a bit of a hike to get to but once there you could sit for hours. Make sure you bring a lunch or snack for you will want to stay.We could not go in the water for the waves were quite hi...  more »

  • Beautiful place to go. It's inconvenient to bring young kids here, because you can't climb down to the grotto with the children on you. Very risky. Also it's a really long walk from the last available parking. In addition you need to book the free parking physically going there in the morning. The parking is free though.
  • I went in the fall and it was absolutely fantastic with relatively few people and easy parking. The trails tough in a good way. My friends and I felt like we were going on an adventure and the sights were very unique.
  • Absolutely beautiful place. The hike to the grotto isn't very long or strenuous, and there are a couple different side trails to hit as well which takes you to the same place. Once you hit the grotto, there is so much rock to hike and explore. The water is absolutely beautiful. It's like you're traveling down south it's so blue! There are bathrooms here and spots to have lunch. You can climb a little bit and get such a gorgeous view. There is a cave to explore (maybe more in the summer) and ways to climb down and get closer to the water. Make sure to bring your camera for all the beautiful photos. It's such a gorgeous place, with lots to see and explore. We will definitely be returning next year to the Grotto.
  • You need to know how to get down to the grotto - if you even made it past the main entrance. Ask around for the easy way to get down otherwise you might miss the grotto entirely
  • What everyone said already. Research the parking policy before you go; weekdays are best. The water is COLD so be prepared if you plan to swim (and even if you don't plan to do so... It's hard to not be tempted by that glorious clear water). Wear decent shoes. I didn't get a chance to fully explore the grotto because you really need to climb/swim it to get inside.
