In 2004 as recent retirees my wife and I stopped because the glacier was so close to the road. We realized we could launch our kayaks and cross the lake to the glacier. We landed to the side and found we could easily walk onto the glacier. I walked maybe a quarter of a mile up. It was beautiful with water running everywhere. It was much easier walking up than down but made it with only one scary slip. I don't recommend this as glaciers are dangerous but I just had to go up. At that time the glacier face was in the lake with a huge ice overhang. When we returned a week later the overhang had collapsed.
As an explorer, here's my spin...You can see this along the highway to Stewart, but you are not allowed to stop on the highway, due to avalanche slopes. This was in April, I wonder if there is a season that is allowable?
