Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, St. John's

4.7
#3 of 8 in Historic Sites in St. John's
Built between 1839 and 1855 in Lombard-Romanesque style, Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist dominates the skyline of the city and impresses visitors with its striking Altar of Sacrifice alongside one of the most valuable pieces of statuary--The Dead Christ. See the play of colors from the brightly stained glass and let your gaze slowly pass to the golden brown ceiling where the arms of the Latin cross meet. The church acts as a symbol for the Irish heritage in Canada, with many Irish contributing to the build of the religious structure. • We went to see the 30th annual showing of the Messiah last night. It was well presented, and the atmosphere/decorating was fantastic. Thanks so much.
  • Loved it. The pastor there is too good and approachable. Me and my friend were just talking with each other and the pastor comes and talks to us. That was so nice of him. He is being transferred to conception bay soon. Apart from that , the architecture too is great and the place is well maintained
  • Awesome architecture. You can actually feel the history in Christianity here. Great place.
  • Impressive interior. steeped in history. Makes you wonder just how much effort went into it.
  • Beautiful structure with art from different parts of western Europe. The Easter Vigil and Midnight Mass ceremonies are memorable masses to see.
