Mount Maxwell Provincial Park, Salt Spring Island

Head to Mount Maxwell Provincial Park, known for its marvellous viewpoint on the top of a towering cliff face. The viewpoint--called Baynes Peak--rewards visitors with memorable views of Vancouver Island, the nearby Gulf Islands, and mainland British Columbia. Hike through a dense forest landscape filled with old growth Douglas firs and Garry oak meadows. Bring some food and have a picnic by the creek while raptor birds soar overhead. Note that when taking a car to the peak, the roads contain many potholes. Don’t forget to bring your camera. • This is our favourite spot on salt spring. The views from Mount Maxwell are just incredible! The drive is quite steep and bumpy, but is totally worth it. Make sure you go on a clear, sunny day to full...  more »

  • You practically feel that you are on top of the world. Amazing view and a great feel in the park. The drive up is an adventure, especially with a smaller car but well worth it.
  • Excellent viewpoints, worth the trip to wander down the hill to the east a little and find some of the others beyond those right at the end of the road. Not 5 stars as the road could be better maintained (lets face it, they must grade it once a year?) Passable by passenger car but not low clearance ones. And the park's only amenities seem to be trail markers, some picnic tables, an outhouse, a haggard looking chainlink fence, and a parking lot full of puddles. BC parks needs to step it up.
  • Beautiful natural forest, great trails for hiking but be prepared. You need good hiking gear and take extra supplies in case you get lost.
  • Sept 28/ 2017. Eelevation measured at 866 meters. I ebiked from Vesuvius Bay and up to Mount Maxwell.Easy climb and a nice work out with the bike. The day was warm and dry, some clear with haze on the horizon.Nice views of the distant island looking south.
  • Amazing hike and trails. Variety of difficulties for different hikers. It takes around 1-1.5 hr from the bottom of Burgoyne Bay to the top of Mt. Maxwell at a walking pace. The view is spectacular at the peak. Some trails are unmarked and easy to get lost; stay attentive.
