St. Andrews Blockhouse National Historic Site, Saint Andrews

Step back in time to the war of 1812 with a visit to the historic St. Andrews Blockhouse National Historic Site, the province's oldest blockhouse. The shelter with small windows was used as an observation point for British soldiers surveying the bay and nearby border on the lookout for American invaders. The architecture is representative of 19th century military defense, and interpretive displays and guides tell more about the building's history and significance. Inside you'll find the preserved living quarters of the soldiers. Though partially destroyed by a fire in 1993, the blockhouse has been carefully restored and remains very close to its original appearance. • I enjoyed walking around and reading about the history of the area. There are many signs with information about the things one is seeing.  more »
  • One of only two original military structures of this type remaining in place in this area. Good, multi lingual site for a look at the past. Great views of the bay and original cannons too!  more »

  • Free for 2017, for Canada 150. Staff weren't very helpful, didn't give any history on the information of the site. Interior of the building has some artifacts, interesting, but would only take 20 minutes to visit the entire site including the cannons out front.
  • Cool spot to spend a bit of time exploring. Interesting self guided billboards to learn of what these were and how they are used. Also worth exploring the area front, and beach just in front of it.
  • Lots of details on the design and function of a block house as well as some details of the war of 1812.
  • Very interesting history of the War of 1812. I always came here as a kid to play on the hill and the rocks to watch the tide go in and out.
  • Very interesting place to visit
