St. Andrews Blockhouse, Saint Andrews
(4.3/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
Step back in time to the war of 1812 with a visit to the historic St. Andrews Blockhouse, the province's oldest blockhouse. The shelter with small windows was used as an observation point for British soldiers surveying the bay and nearby border on the lookout for American invaders. The architecture is representative of 19th century military defense, and interpretive displays and guides tell more about the building's history and significance. Inside you'll find the preserved living quarters of the soldiers. Though partially destroyed by a fire in 1993, the blockhouse has been carefully restored and remains very close to its original appearance. A visit to St. Andrews Blockhouse represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Saint Andrews trip itinerary builder to plot your vacation.

  • each time we visit the area we stop for a pinic lunch and enjoy the view from the block house. the area is informative and well maintained
  • This little spot was very interesting. it explained the historical value. The Blockhouse was easy to find and the grounds were very well kept.
  • I spent some time walking around this quiet waterside park. The information on the history gave a good perspective and the view of the water was lovely.

  • Cool spot to spend a bit of time exploring. Interesting self guided billboards to learn of what these were and how they are used. Also worth exploring the area front, and beach just in front of it.
  • Lots of details on the design and function of a block house as well as some details of the war of 1812.
  • It's an odd building by the water, part of our Canadian heritage. Men with guns and cannons defended the shores here. Took five minutes to look at and walk around in. Didn't do much for me, but it is an interesting landmark.
  • Very interesting history of the War of 1812. I always came here as a kid to play on the hill and the rocks to watch the tide go in and out.
  • A nice historical site
